FC Barcelona has commenced the work to adapt the Olympic Stadium to its needs and the requirements of La Lliga and the international competitions that it takes part in. The men’s first team will be playing in the Montjuïc stadium during the 2023-2024 season, while part of the remodelling work is carried out on the Spotify Camp Nou.

The agreement between FC Barcelona and Barcelona City Council was made official this June, during a ceremony attended by the First Deputy Mary and Chair of B:SM, Jaume Collboni; the President of Barça, Joan Laporta; the Deputy Institutional President, Elena Fort; and the manager in charge of the Espai Barça, Jordi Llauradó. Under the agreement, the Club will be able to use the Stadium from August 2023 to May 2024. It will also be available for use for occasional needs or training by the women’s team who played in the Champions League quarter-finals and semi-finals this year at the Camp Nou.

Barça has commenced work on the pitch, changing the drainage, irrigation and water treatment system. It is also being adapted to the necessary sizes established by the Club. General refurbishment work will then begin on the Olympic Stadium changing rooms, press boxes and hospitality areas, and competition and TV broadcasting systems will also be installed.

Adaptation of the facility

The assigned use of the facility agreed to covers everything from the pitch and stands to other auxiliary areas, such as press boxes, changing rooms and indoor car parks.

To guarantee the general public have good access to the Olympic Stadium, Barcelona City Council and FC Barcelona have worked on a plan to boost public transport and sustainable mobility and have brought in extra maintenance and safety, to ensure as little impact as possible on the mountain. This Thursday the Barcelona City Council Government Commission approved the agreement providing for these actions.

Extra public transport

There will be extra Funicular services and temporary shuttle buses between the main access points on public transport. Extended metro service hours are also envisaged, where necessary, to fit round match times. A bike lane and three new Bicing bike-hire stations will also be installed between Plaça Espanya and Miramar, to encourage sustainable mobility on Montjuïc.

Where needed, lighting along the main walking routes will be improved during match times and pedestrian paths will be laid between public transport points and the Stadium.

In harmony with Olympic Ring activity

The City Council, B:SM and FC Barcelona have worked to make the Club's activities compatible with all the other cultural, sports and civic uses of the Olympic Ring and all other facilities on Montjuïc. In any event, everything will be done to ensure the work does not coincide with any other event planned at the Palau Sant Jordi or on the Olympic Esplanade.
