First steps towards renovating the escalators on Montjuïc mountain

Barcelona de Serveis Municipals (B:SM) is putting work out to tender for renovating Montjuïc mountain’s 22 escalators 

The work has a budget of 5 million euros and will be completed by the start of 2026

The escalators will be replaced section by section, ensuring accessibility to the mountain at all times  

Barcelona de Serveis Municipals (B:SM) has put work out to tender for renovating Parc de Montjuïc’s 22 escalators. The initiative will ensure equality with regard to accessibility all over the mountain while better managing citizen journeys. 

The replacement of the escalators is budgeted at 5 million euros and work is expected to be completed by the start of 2026. 

New easy-maintenance and low-energy escalators  

The aim is to renovate all 22 escalators on Montjuïc mountain in accordance with sustainability, safety and resistance criteria. The search is on for a new escalator model that promotes energy efficiency and savings The improvements will include, among other things, the installation of a remote-control and monitoring system for optimising the maintenance and availability of the facilities. 

The work will be carried out in stages 

The escalators will be renovated section by section, ensuring accessibility to the mountain at all times. That means the current escalators will coexist alongside the new ones while the works are being carried out. Work is expected to begin at the start of 2025.
