Bicing has activated a specific action plan to minimise the impact that periods of extreme heat can have on the availability of electric bikes. The aim is to reduce disruptions to the service through a set of technical and operational measures that help maintain the highest possible availability of bikes in a context of exceptionally high temperatures.
Like any system based on lithium-ion batteries, electric bikes may have their charging process temporarily affected during periods of extreme heat. In these situations, battery protection systems may temporarily limit charging to ensure safety and proper operation, which may at times reduce the availability of part of the fleet, particularly during the middle of the day. For this reason, Bicing recommends that users plan their journeys in advance through the app, which allows them to check the availability of bikes and stations in real time.
In response to this situation, Bicing has activated a specific plan combining technical, operational and logistical measures aimed at reducing this impact and ensuring the highest possible reliability of the service.
These measures come in a context in which electric bikes have established themselves as the preferred option for more than 170,000 users. They currently account for 60% of the Bicing fleet and nearly eight out of every ten journeys.
