Once again, fourth year compulsory secondary and post-compulsory secondary school students took part in this science day organised by Barcelona de Serveis Municipals (BSM) and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia - BarcelonaTech (UPC)

The Fòrum hosted ten activities relating to biology, mathematics, physics, chemistry and technology to promote scientific vocations among young people, and especially girls

On 29 March, Parc del Fòrum once again became a scientific testing ground, with STEAM activities organised jointly, for the fifth consecutive year, by Barcelona de Serveis Municipals (BSM) and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia‘s Barcelona East School of Engineering (UPC - EEBE).

The project aims to promote the world of science among young people, and especially girls, to foster scientific vocations within the student body in a fun way, but using a rigorous academic approach. Today, Parc del Fòrum received 1,600 boys and girls in the last year of compulsory secondary and post-compulsory secondary school students.

On this occasion, 39 secondary schools from Barcelona, the Metropolitan Area and for the first time ever, the counties of Tarragona, took part in ten 30-minute workshops run by EEBE students and teaching staff from the UPC, with the assistance of the teachers from the schools taking part. A morning full of activities linked to the world of science, with such interesting projects as using dance to understand how an accelerometer works, measuring the height of the Fòrum with trigonometry, measuring the velocity of an arrow in flight and using a real circuit to understand the conductivity of water through Ohm‘s Law.

With regard to physics, there was also a master class entitled ‘Music: The music of spheres’, given by Luis Carlos Pardo, who has a PhD in Physics from the UPC, where the participants discovered how music is linked to physics and mathematics.

Parc del Fòrum is the second venue used for the STEAM sessions planned for this year, after Palau Sant Jordi hosted the first morning session in February, attended by over 2,100 students. In the coming months, Parc d'atraccions Tibidabo and the Zoo de Barcelona will have their turns, in May and November, with sessions on physics and biology, respectively.

STEAM, a consolidated activity on the scientific calendar for young people

This is the fifth edition of STEAM activities run by BSM and the UPC, who plans to play host to over 6,000 students at the various venues in 2023: Palau Sant Jordi, Parc del Fòrum, Parc d'atraccions Tibidabo, and the most recent addition, the Zoo de Barcelona.

Last year, this educational initiative played host to 6,079 boys and girls in these emblematic city facilities. BSM is thereby continuing to reinforce its commitment to promote the social and educational use of some distinctive Barcelona locations.

With the aim of promoting science and technology in different ways, STEAM culture uses fun activities to foster critical thinking and gender equality among young Catalan people. To this effect, the programme also seeks to highlight prominent women, with a special emphasis on breaking away from stereotypes and fostering scientific vocations among girls.
