El Xaloc and La Morera are the two new sustainable eateries within the Zoo's Healthy Catering Plan

This Easter, the Zoo is offering various educational activities, from the traditional spring playground to a new Zoo Club activity, the 'Nature Passport.'

For Easter Week, the Zoo de Barcelona is launching two new eateries: El Xaloc and La Morera. The opening of these two venues is part of the ongoing Healthy Dining Plan that began in June 2021 with the opening of the La Dama restaurant, specialising in market cuisine.

El Xaloc is located next to the Sahel area, while La Morera is next to the Biodiversity Garden, close to the future new Mediterranean area. Both restaurants will offer self-service meals and include menus based on Mediterranean, healthy, organic and zero-kilometre cuisine.

Diners can eat on the terraces of the two restaurants or take their meals to any of the Zoo's picnic areas.
Both establishments follow the same aesthetic line exteriorly, with a neutral image based on the use of wood and metal to better blend in with the environment and give full prominence to the animals' habitats.

The new eateries promote sustainable and environmentally friendly practices by prioritising the use of biodegradable elements and materials and eliminating single-use plastic packaging. To this effect, the Zoo has joined the 'Beure sense Plàstic' ('Be clean without plastic') campaign, promoted by the Ajuntament de Barcelona, which encourages best practices in the catering service.

A new step in the Zoo's Healthy Dining Plan

With El Xaloc and La Morera, the Zoo de Barcelona is reaffirming its commitment to a quality gastronomic offer, consistent with the New Zoo Model. This journey began in 2019 with the approval of the Healthy Dining Plan: the Zoo's dining areas will feature a gastronomic offer that promotes a Mediterranean and sustainable diet and has balance and health as its foundation.

The basis of the plan is a commitment to seasonal foods and local and organic products, as well as culinary alternatives for people with food intolerances and other options, such as vegetarian and vegan cuisine.

An Easter Week filled with activities at Zoo de Barcelona

This Easter, the Zoo is offering a whole range of activities aimed at children and families, with exciting proposals such as the third activity in the Zoo Club's 'Nature Passport' programme, an initiative for Zoo Club members. This time, through the 'Va de caques’ (It’s all about poop) activity, participants will learn about the importance of these types of traces and everything they teach us about wildlife.

Over the holiday period, there will also be other free family activities included in the entrance fee, such as meetings with keepers and carers to show how the Zoo works for the welfare and conservation of giant tortoises and bison, and the 'Invertebrate Laboratory' activity: an opportunity to explore the world of these species, which are often small but essential to ecosystems.

This April, in the Invertebrate Space, you will also be able to see how the leaf cutter ants are taking up residence in the nest they have recently been given access to, along with how they make a substrate used to grow the fungus that forms the basis of their diet.

Last, a 'Salvem els animals’ (Save the animals) spring camp will be held from 3 to 5 April, aimed at boys and girls aged 5 to 14. The event—for which registration is already closed—offers a varied programme of activities relating to the conservation of biodiversity, where even the youngest children will learn to appreciate nature and discover the work carried out at the Zoo.

The Zoo, committed to sustainable mobility

The Zoo also has two new parking areas for personal mobility vehicles located at the entrance to the premises. Visitors arriving at the Zoo on bicycles, skateboards and electric scooters can park them in these spaces by securing them with their locks. The parking areas are equipped with chargers for electric skateboards, powered by photovoltaic panels.
