Nearly 200 concrete blocks are being added to form a containing wall which will protect the Municipal Sailing Centre (CMV) against maritime storms
The project is part of a series of actions by BSM over the last three years to improve and update the maritime infrastructures at Port Olímpic
The work comes just ahead of the start of the project to completely revamp the Municipal Sailing Centre
A further step in the project to transform Port Olímpic. Barcelona de Serveis Municipals (BSM) is carrying out work to strengthen the sea wall around the Municipal Sailing Centre (CMV). The work got under way at the end of January but has become much more visible in recent weeks with the installation of the concrete blocks, which will improve the safety of this area.
The sea wall protects the access ramp used by boats at the CMV. The purpose of the work is to apply a structural reinforcement and consolidation system. To this end, a platform has been built from which the process is now under way to submerge 188 concrete blocks in all. Each one weighs 25 tonnes and measures 2 x 2 x 2 metres. Their positioning along the entire section will reduce the consequences of maritime storms at the port.
The project also entails a comprehensive clean-up of the seabed by the ramp to the CMV. The work has a budget of one million euros and is due to be completed at the end of May.
The reinforcement of this section of sea wall forms part of a series of actions by BSM over the last three years to improve and update the maritime infrastructures at Port Olímpic. Other work carried out includes the reinforcement and consolidation of the main sea wall, work on the anchoring chain system and the renewal of the cord mooring system.
Key role of the Municipal Sailing Centre for nautical activity at Port Olímpic
The Municipal Sailing Centre is set for a complete overhaul in the spring, enabling it to offer more services and improve the efficiency, sustainability and accessibility of the facility. The project will work at two levels. Firstly, the improvement of facilities, and secondly, the construction of a new multi-purpose hall in the upper part of the CMV, to be managed by BSM.
The Municipal Sailing Centre will play an important role in the nautical activity planned at Port Olímpic in this new stage.
Nearly 18,000 people enjoy the nautical activities organised at the centre every year, which range from paddle surf to kayak and scuba diving. The centre also offers beginner classes for children in these types of sports. This has allowed over 100,000 schoolchildren to practise sailing since the facility was opened.
