Transforming the Anella Olímpica into a venue for major events

The transformation of the Anella Olímpica is moving forward with the selection of the architectural design for the new Sant Jordi Club, Spain’s first major venue purpose-designed to deliver the best possible live music experience.

This strategic initiative led by BSM reinforces the ambition to establish the Anella Olímpica as one of Europe’s leading music and cultural hubs. The transformation is structured around four main priorities:

  1. Improving the experience of audiences, artists and promoters before, during and after events.
  2. Strengthening technical and production capabilities to meet the demands of the most complex shows.
  3. Advancing sustainability and energy efficiency, enabling high-quality events to be held with a lower environmental impact.
  4. Ensuring universal, clear and inclusive accessibility tailored to major events.

This vision puts people at the heart of the project and conceives the Anella Olímpica as a place designed for experiencing events from start to finish: before, during and after concerts.

With 198 events and more than 2.4 million spectators in 2025, the Anella Olímpica has confirmed its status as an essential stop on major national and international tours. This programme has particularly strong links with local audiences: in recent years, more than 80% of those attending its events have come from Barcelona, the metropolitan area and the rest of Catalonia, demonstrating both its strong local roots and its international reach.

A new Sant Jordi Club to take the live music experience to the next level

The proposal submitted by Paris-based studio Bruther and Barcelona-based Jorge Vidal Studio has been selected as the winner of the international design competition organised by BSM.

Scheduled to open in 2029, the new venue will complete a unique ecosystem comprising three major venues in a single location—Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, Palau Sant Jordi and Sant Jordi Club—capable of hosting a rich and diverse programme throughout the year, attracting leading national and international tours and promoting local talent. An ecosystem that also consolidates Barcelona’s position as one of the world’s great cultural capitals.

In this context, the new Sant Jordi Club will play a key role in taking the live music experience across the Anella Olímpica to the next level. Its opening will expand and complement the Olympic complex’s current offering with a versatile, sustainable venue of outstanding technical and acoustic quality, equipped to meet the sector’s evolving needs and provide a more comfortable and memorable experience.

It will be a place designed not only for listening to music, but for feeling, sharing and experiencing it in the best possible conditions, from arrival and the welcome areas to the services, the time spent at the venue and the post-concert experience. It will offer unique, high-quality experiences in a flexible venue equipped for increasingly complex productions.

Mayor Jaume Collboni has placed the new Sant Jordi Club within the transformation of the Nou Montjuïc, including the redevelopment of Fira de Barcelona and the Anella Olímpica: ‘The Anella Olímpica is a publicly owned space with three major arenas, and as part of this reclaiming of Montjuïc, we want to modernise its facilities and, in the case of the Sant Jordi Club, equip it with the latest technology. Barcelona has excelled in its ability to attract major international concerts and provide opportunities for local artists, and the public-sector commitment is to maintain this.’ ‘We want the Sant Jordi Club to be a venue in its own right, designed primarily for live music, with a scalable capacity of between 3,000 and 9,000 spectators,’ he added, ‘so that we can offer capacities ranging from 3,000 to 54,000 spectators in one location, with a design that connects with its surroundings and considers not only what happens inside, but also how people get there and what it is like to spend time there.’

1 - Architecture that takes the concert experience to the next level

The proposal by Bruther and Jorge Vidal Studio presents the new Sant Jordi Club as a distinctive building that is also respectful of Palau Sant Jordi, designed by Arata Isozaki. With a floor area of 17,000 m2, the project consists of a rectangular building approximately 25 metres high, with two underground floors, which blends naturally into the Montjuïc landscape and preserves Palau Sant Jordi’s prominence within the Olympic complex.

The architectural proposal also focuses on the quality of the experience from start to finish. The project will create a large entrance plaza on the western façade, connected to the Esplanada Olímpica, which will serve as the new venue’s main entrance and outdoor foyer. This space will host services and activities so that visitors can enjoy the experience from the moment they arrive.

The plaza will connect to a large indoor foyer, designed as the main arrival and welcome area of the new Sant Jordi Club. The foyer will include a range of food, drink and merchandise outlets and direct visitors along the different routes into the auditorium.

Outside, there will also be a second plaza designed to allow audiences to leave smoothly and in an orderly manner, and a third plaza for the venue’s logistical, technical and operational activities. This layout will improve circulation, separate the different uses and make both the audience experience and operations for artists, promoters and technical teams more comfortable.

2 - A flexible auditorium with outstanding acoustics, technically equipped for the most demanding productions

The new Sant Jordi Club will be purpose-designed for live music and mid-sized shows, with flexible capacities ranging from 3,500 to 9,000 people. The auditorium will be adaptable to different concert and production configurations, with seated or standing audiences, fixed and retractable seating, movable chairs and spaces equipped to meet the needs of each event.

Acoustic quality will be a key element of the project. The auditorium will be designed to provide a high-quality sound experience for different concert and performance formats, with sound-absorbing materials on the walls, acoustically treated seating and a ‘box within a box’ soundproofing system. These measures will allow the new Sant Jordi Club to operate alongside Palau Sant Jordi. The auditorium will also feature first-class multimedia and audiovisual technology designed to meet the current demands of concerts and major productions, including lighting, sound, video and streaming systems.

This combination of flexibility, capacity and top-quality technical features will cover a key segment of the live music circuit for audiences of up to 9,000, providing a venue for mid-sized concerts and shows that is currently unavailable in Barcelona.

3 - An accessible venue designed for everyone to enjoy

Accessibility will be a key element in ensuring that the experience at the new Sant Jordi Club is unique and inclusive from arrival to departure. The project will improve access to its spaces, services and routes, with solutions designed to make it easier for everyone to find their way around, move through and use the venue. In this way, the Anella Olímpica strengthens its commitment to providing an accessible experience on equal terms for all attendees.

4 - A sustainable strategy to make the new Sant Jordi Club a European benchmark for major events

The winning proposal incorporates sustainability as a cross-cutting principle. The project will be developed in accordance with the BREEAM New Construction certification criteria and includes measures to reduce energy consumption, limit its carbon footprint and improve user comfort.

The main measures planned include generating renewable energy through photovoltaic panels, air-source heat pump technology, rainwater harvesting, the use of low-carbon and recycled materials, and the application of circular economy principles during construction.

The landscaping scheme will promote biodiversity, soil permeability and natural water management, while also helping to reduce the urban heat island effect and improve the environmental quality of the Anella Olímpica’s outdoor spaces.

With this project, Barcelona reinforces its ambition to be a major cultural capital and consolidates the Anella Olímpica as a leading space where emotion, culture and the city come together.

With more than 160 concerts scheduled, Anella Olímpica consolidates its reputation as a leading venue for live music with a plural, diverse offering for all audiences

In the coming months, the city will host concerts from top artists like Bad Bunny, Eric Clapton, The Weeknd, Aitana and Oques Grasses, among others

Once again, the calendar at the Anella Olímpica – a space managed by BSM – is packed this spring-summer season. With more than 160 concerts planned throughout the year, the calendar at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, Palau Sant Jordi and Sant Jordi Club is once again positioning Barcelona as a leading international city for live music.

This year, 2026, is especially filled with large-format events and renowned artists who have made Barcelona a key stop on their major music tours. The calendar features exclusive concerts within Spain, longer stints with several consecutive nights at the same venue and especially significant events in some performers’ careers.

The programme is a plural, diverse range of events for all audiences that boosts Anella Olímpica’s role as a leading cultural venue. On top of that, with this activity level, 2026 is slated to be a record year in terms of both the number of events and the prestige of the artists scheduled to perform here.

Residencies, Spanish exclusives and long-awaited concerts

This year, Palau Sant Jordi is the venue for longer stints at Anella Olímpica, with popular artists who have made more tickets available by putting on more than one concert. Things get started with Rosalía, who will hold four concerts on 13, 15, 17 and 18 April in one of the most talked-about concert series of 2026. Aitana will also perform there on 4, 5, 7 and 8 September, while La Oreja de Van Gogh will hold four concerts on 6, 7, 26 and 27 November.

In this busy schedule, Palau Sant Jordi will also host exclusive concerts in Spain on great artists’ international tours. Examples include Eric Clapton on 10 May; TWICE on 12 May; Synthony on 21 October; and Niall Horan, who will take to the stage on 25 October.

Then there is Sant Jordi Club, with concerts from Pau Vallvé, scheduled for 25 April; Rodrigo Cuevas on 9 May; Placebo on 3 October; and La Fúmiga on 16 and 17 October. During the same period, Palau Sant Jordi will be the venue for concerts by Morat, who will perform on 16 and 17 October; Melendi on 1 and 2 November; Pitbull on 4 November; and Bryan Adams on 14 November.

This busy schedule becomes even more extraordinary at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, which will host some of the most eagerly awaited concerts of the season. With a musical career spanning more than fifteen years, Oques Grasses are now saying goodbye to their fans with four concerts, on 5, 7, 9 and 10 October. The finishing touch on the programme is provided by other highly anticipated events, like the return of El Último de la Fila with concerts on 3 and 7 May, and the first stop on the European leg of Bad Bunny’s tour, scheduled for 22 and 23 May, which confirm 2026 as an exceptional year that puts Barcelona and Anella Olímpica at the heart of the international musical calendar.

The Estadi Olímpic schedule also features performances by Don Omar on 23 July and The Weeknd, with a concert on 1 September, which highlight the venue’s status as a key venue for large-format concerts.

Beyond live music, in 2026, Anella Olímpica will strengthen its role as a multi-purpose, strategic venue for hosting major international events. In sport, one of the most outstanding events of the next year will be the Tour de France Grand Départ (4 and 5 July), which will end at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. Also on the calendar is the third edition of Premier Padel, which will turn Palau Sant Jordi into the world capital of this sport from 10 to 13 December.

All in all, the 2026 programme solidifies Anella Olímpica’s position as one of the main catalysts of cultural activity and events in the city, with a range of activities that combines quality artists and international appeal and boosts its role as a key venue in Barcelona’s events calendar.

The Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, the Palau Sant Jordi and the Sant Jordi Club reaffirm their international reputation as leading venues for major music tours

Concerts account for the majority of events at the Anella Olímpica, a city venue which respects and engages with the surrounding area and which boasts a wide-ranging line-up accessible to everybody thanks to partnerships with some thirty music promoters

This coming 2026 will also feature an exceptional music line-up, with sell-out events at the Estadi Olímpic and numerous concerts by national and international artists

The Anella Olímpica is closing out a record 2025 with 198 events that drew more than 2.4 million people. The Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, the Palau Sant Jordi and the Sant Jordi Club have once again reaffirmed their international reputation as leading venues for large-format events, particularly major music tours.

The number of events grew by 15%, and attracted 11% more people than the previous year. This meant that the Anella Olímpica as whole was at nearly full capacity throughout the year, with activities on 351 days (including assembly/dismantling days for each event).

As for eventgoers, the trend from recent years continues. On average, 42% came from Barcelona and the metropolitan area, compared to 34.7% from the rest of Catalonia, 16.2% from other parts of Spain and 7.1% from other countries. These figures show that the programming at the Anella Olímpica connects with local audiences from Barcelona and Catalonia, while also attracting visitors from all over with its wide range of large-format cultural and sports events.

“The figures for the close of 2025 mark three record-breaking years at the Anella Olímpica and reaffirm the success of a public management and public-private partnership model that offers options for all audiences”, said First Deputy Mayor and BSM chair Laia Bonet. “These data also reinforce the Anella Olímpica’s potential as a city space that respects and engages with the surrounding area”.

A musical year with top national and international artists

Concerts remain were again the main event type at the Anella Olímpica. There were a total of 116 concerts last year, attracting nearly 1.2 million people.

Half of them were hosted by the Palau Sant Jordi (58), followed by the Sant Jordi Club (51) and the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys (7).

The Anella Olímpica once again offered concerts spanning a rich variety of styles. This diversity is the result of close relationships between the BSM-managed facility and some thirty local and international music promoters.

The 2025 line-up featured a variety of concerts by national (51) and international (65) artists. In fact, eleven international artists chose the Anella Olímpica for their only concert in Spain: Ateez, Tomorrow X Together, Guns N’ Roses, Billie Eilish, Ado, Kendrick Lamar, Blackpink, Post Malone, Lady Gaga, Jamiroquai and Mumford & Sons, between them offering 14 concerts not seen anywhere else in Spain.

Over the course of the year, more and more artists made multiple appearances at the Anella Olímpica. Lady Gaga gave three concerts, while Quevedo, Sabina, Rauw Alejandro, Billie Eilish, Antonio Orozco, Rels B and Mike Towers gave two.

In addition to these international stars, in 2025 the Anella Olímpica also continued demonstrating its long-standing commitment to promoting local talent and supporting their international projection, with concerts by Amaia, Aitana, Mushka, Rigoberta Bandini, Belén Aguilera, Lágrimas de Sangre, Mónica Naranjo, Loquillo, Nil Moliner and Antonio Orozco, among others.

Family and sports events with deep city roots

Family shows, sports and corporate events, film shoots and city activities rounded out the Anella Olímpica’s calendar. These events (58 in total) attracted nearly 200,000 people.

Highlights included Disney on Ice, linked to the Palau Sant Jordi since 1993; the Cirque du Soleil, the Catalonia vs. Palestine fundraising match, Trial Indoor Barcelona, the Premier Padel Finals, the Esport i Dansa Ara school event and more.

Not to mention FC Barcelona’s 24 matches at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in 2025, with over a million spectators.

Exceptional music programme for 2026

Next year will also be an exceptional year for music at the Anella Olímpica, which will once again be an essential stop for major national and international tours, many of them offering up to four concerts.

Names such as El Último de la Fila (3 and 7 May), Bad Bunny (22 and 23 May) and Oques Grasses (5, 7, 9 and 10 October) have already sold out numerous concerts at the Estadi Olímpic, where The Weeknd will also be performing on 1 September.

The Palau Sant Jordi has also sold out for Fito & Fitipaldis (16 and 17 January), Hans Zimmer (27 March), Rosalía (13, 15, 17 and 18 April) and Aitana (4, 5, 7 and 8 September). Other artists to choose the venue include Bad Gyal (20, 21 and 22 March), Dani Martin (25 April and 24 October), Eric Clapton (10 May) and La Oreja de Van Gogh (6, 7, 26 and 27 November).

As for sports, the Tour de France Grand Départ (4 and 5 July), will end up at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, and there will be a new edition of Trial Indoor Barcelona (8 February).

Progress on the transformation of the Sant Jordi Club with the selection of a winning architectural project

Next year will also be an important year for the transformation under way at the Anella Olímpica, turning it into a first-class site that will maintain Barcelona’s strong position in the international live music and large events market.
A key moment in this transformation next year will come with the announcement of the winning project in the international architecture competition to design the new Sant Jordi Club, which will offer the highest technical, acoustic and visual quality prioritising user experience and sustainability. Moreover, its flexible capacity ranging from 3,500 to 9,000 people will make it unlike any other venue in the city to date. Thanks to Barcelona City Council company BSM’s investment of 70 million euros, the new Sant Jordi Club will be the first major auditorium in Spain specifically designed for live music.

In addition, during the course of the year work will be carried out at the Estadi Olímpic and the Palau Sant Jordi to improve infrastructure, operations and user experiences at these venues. The lighting system on the Esplanada Olímpica will also be renovated, making it more energy efficient.

Over these 35 years, 26.8 million people have enjoyed more than 2,500 events held at Palau Sant Jordi and Sant Jordi Club

In recent years, there has been a notable increase in the number of concerts as a result of the global boom in live music and major shows

This Sunday, 21 September, marks 35 years since the opening of Palau Sant Jordi. The venue, conceived for the Barcelona ’92 Olympic Games and designed by the Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, was handed over to the city on 21 September 1990 in an official ceremony that highlighted its advanced technology, the materials used and its versatility of uses. It was a space created and prepared from the outset to host all sorts of sporting activities, as well as major events such as concerts, operas, fairs and conferences.

Following that official presentation, there were three days of open days under the slogan “Come and see the greatest show on earth”, which gave the people of Barcelona the opportunity to discover what would become one of the main Olympic venues and, without doubt, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. A total of 270,000 people attended.

In the words of Isozaki, Palau Sant Jordi, together with its annexed hall – now the Sant Jordi Club – was intended to have “a universal character”, and so it has proved. According to the First Deputy Mayor and President of BSM, Laia Bonet, “35 years on, Palau Sant Jordi and the Anella Olímpica as a whole remain a benchmark for sporting events and, above all, a key stage for the live music sector, with a permanent programme of concerts by national and international artists of every style.  And all of it under public leadership.”

As a public company of the Ajuntament de Barcelona, BSM took over the management of the Anella Olímpica in 2003 by mandate of the City Council. Since then, it has consolidated the Anella Olímpica as an international reference point in culture, sport and entertainment. Its experience and professionalism have been key to preserving the Olympic legacy and putting it at the service of the public and of Barcelona’s global standing.

More than 2,500 events and 26.8 million attendees

Since it opened, Palau Sant Jordi and Sant Jordi Club have hosted more than 2,500 events, attracting 26.8 million people. Almost half of these events (45%) have been concerts, followed by fairs and corporate events (35%), major sporting fixtures (13%), and other events such as family shows or film shoots (7%).

Live music is by far the fastest-growing type of event over the years. In the last decade, 7 out of every 10 events held at Palau Sant Jordi and Sant Jordi Club have been concerts. This is partly due to the shift in the music industry – with the rise of streaming driving demand for tours and concerts over recorded music – and partly thanks to the capacity and versatility of these arenas, which hold 18,400 and 4,600 people respectively, as well as the long-standing relationships the Anella Olímpica has built with more than 40 local and international promoters who make all these events possible.

A stage open to all audiences and musical styles

The first artist to perform at Palau Sant Jordi was Luciano Pavarotti. The Italian tenor took to the stage just a few days after the opening ceremony, on 29 September 1990. One of the hallmarks of this arena is the wide variety of musical styles it has welcomed since the very beginning, opening its doors to every audience. Opera, pop, rock, metal, classical, punk... All genres have found a place here, including electronic music, Latin sounds and new trends such as K-pop.

Palau Sant Jordi has also played an important role in the careers of national artists. For performers such as Rosalía, Rigoberta Bandini, Joan Dausà, Nil Moliner, Oques Grasses, Manuel Carrasco, Lola Índigo and Aitana, it was the first or one of the first major venues where they appeared. Others have made it one of their most frequent stages in Spain: Joaquín Sabina (18 concerts), Alejandro Sanz (16), Estopa (13), Fito & Fitipaldis (12), David Bisbal (11) and Pablo Alborán (10).

Among international artists, those who have performed most frequently at Palau Sant Jordi are Eros Ramazzotti (11 concerts), Madonna (7), Bryan Adams (7), U2 (7) and Laura Pausini (5).

There have been many memorable moments on the stages of Palau Sant Jordi and Sant Jordi Club, but one in particular has gone down in Barcelona’s musical history: the Love of Lesbian concert on 27 March 2021. It was the first large-scale concert of the pandemic era, following a year without live music.

A venue for a wide range of international sporting events

Sport has also played a key role in the history of Palau Sant Jordi. Before hosting the gymnastics and volleyball competitions at the Barcelona ’92 Olympic Games, it had already staged the international basketball tournament McDonald’s Open (1990).
These international events were followed by other major competitions such as the World Indoor Athletics Championships (1995), the FIFA Futsal World Cup 1996, the World Swimming Championships (2003–2013), the World Snowboard Championships (2011), the World Handball Championships (2013), the Basketball World Cup (2014) and the World Roller Games Barcelona 2019.

As with music, what stands out is the variety of sporting disciplines that have been held at Palau Sant Jordi over the years. These have included five-a-side football, American football, tennis, indoor athletics, climbing and judo, as well as handball, taekwondo, kickboxing, trial, enduro and karting, among others.

Also notable were the years when FC Barcelona’s basketball team played its home games at Palau Sant Jordi (1991–1994), along with events such as Dirt Track (1991, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017) and Ski Indoor (1992, 1993 and 1995).

A stage for family shows with deep roots in the city

Family productions have been an integral part of Palau Sant Jordi’s history since the very beginning. Disney On Ice, for example, came to Palau Sant Jordi in 1993 and has since staged 29 editions. It is by far the event that has been held most frequently at the venue.

Another company that has chosen this stage many times for its shows is Cirque du Soleil, with eight shows at Palau Sant Jordi.
Another highlight in this field is the Esport i Dansa Ara gathering, the annual event that concludes what is now the educational sports programme with the highest participation among Barcelona’s schools. On that day, thousands of children fill the floor of Palau Sant Jordi and perform, in front of their families and teachers, the dances they have spent months rehearsing at school.
Around 50 artists will perform at the Anella Olímpica before the end of the year

The line-up at Palau Sant Jordi and Sant Jordi Club for the coming months confirms the strong position of these arenas on the national and international live music circuit. Between now and December, around 50 artists will perform here, and for some, this will be their only concert in Spain.

On the national scene, names set to appear at Palau Sant Jordi before the end of the year include Joaquín Sabina (2 and 4 October), Manuel Carrasco (10 October), Vanesa Martín (25 October), Los Pecos (26 October and 28 December), Leiva (8 November), Antonio Orozco (28 and 29 November), Mónica Naranjo (19 December) and Raphael (20 December).

As for international tours, highlights include Mora (23 September), with all tickets sold out; Lady Gaga (28, 29 and 31 October), Jamiroquai (6 November) and Mumford & Sons (23 November), who will not be performing anywhere else in Spain; as well as Katy Perry (9 November) and Anuel AA (22 and 26 November).

Also over the coming months, Sant Jordi Club will host, among many others, Daminano David (21 September), already sold out; Delaossa (4 October), Manuel Turizo (11 October), Los Planetas (17 October), Ojete Calor (25 October), Belén Aguilera (8 November), Lágrimas de Sangre (14 and 15 November), Roxette (16 November), Crystal Fighters (27 November) and Loquillo (27 December).

In sports, from 11 to 14 December, Palau Sant Jordi will host the Premier Padel Finals, featuring the world’s best padel.
Looking ahead to 2026, some of the first names confirmed for Anella Olímpica include Fito&Fitipaldis (16 and 17 January), Julieta (13 February), Mikel Izal (20 February), Hans Zimmer (27 March), Pau Vallvé (25 April), Dani Martín (25 April and 24 October), Eros Ramazzotti (2 May), El Último de la Fila (3 and 7 May) and Bad Bunny (22 and 23 May).

The new Sant Jordi Club will become the first large venue in Spain designed to elevate the experience of live music and medium-scale shows

The goal is to offer the highest possible technical, acoustic and visual quality while prioritising sustainability and the audience experience. With flexible capacities ranging from 3,500 to 9,000 spectators, it fills a gap in Barcelona’s current cultural offering

With a total investment of €70 million, the new Sant Jordi Club is coming into its own and will emerge as a new national standard-bearer for live music and culture

Barcelona is launching the transformation of the Anella Olímpica as part of the New Montjuïc project presented by Mayor Jaume Collboni at the start of 2025. The first phase of this transformation will be the renovation of the Sant Jordi Club to turn it into the first specially designed large-scale venue in Spain. With 16,500 square metres, the new Sant Jordi Club will be able to host flexible events with capacity numbers ranging from 3,500 to 9,000, an option unlike anything else currently available in Barcelona. This transformation of the Anella Olímpica in general and the Sant Jordi Club will specifically benefit local audiences, who accounted for over 80% of eventgoers at the Anella in 2024. Specifically, 40% of audience members were from Barcelona and its metropolitan area, while 43% were from the rest of Catalonia.

The transformation of the Sant Jordi Club will be carried out through an international architecture contest and will involve a planned investment of 70 million euros, funded entirely by BSM’s business profits.

“Today we’re kicking off the transformation of the Anella Olímpica,” said First Deputy Mayor and BSM Chair Laia Bonet in statements to the media. “After several years, we’re starting to renovate and modernise the Anella, and we want the new Sant Jordi Club to be much more than a concert venue; we want it to offer something completely new for the city, with first-class technical infrastructure.”

The commitment to transforming Montjuïc, presented by Mayor Collboni last February in his “L’alcalde respon” talk, seeks to turn the mountain into a major metropolitan park and green lung for the city, culture and sport, with the renovation of Plaça d’Espanya, Fira, the gardens and the Palau d’Esports, in addition to the Anella Olímpica. This transformation will be accompanied by enhanced public transport at a site now to be served by the L2 metro line, which will connect the city centre to the airport through Montjuïc and La Marina.

1.    The current context: record-breaking years at the Anella Olímpica

After two consecutive record-breaking years (2023 and 2024), with over 2 million people attending over 170 events, the Anella Olímpica (Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, Palau Sant Jordi, the Sant Jordi Club and Esplanada Olímpica) is taking action to ensure that Barcelona continues to be a global leader in offering the best experiences at concerts, sports events and other large-scale cultural, entertainment and corporate events.

Of the 2.2 million visitors in 2024, 40% were from Barcelona and its metropolitan area, 43% from the rest of Catalonia, 10% from various parts of Spain and 7% from other countries around the world. These figures back up the Anella’s approach as a model of public-private management in making diverse, high-quality, accessible culture a key part of improving city residents’ quality of life. This initiative, then, is a by-Barcelona, for-Barcelona project that also has its sights set on the rest of the world.

2.    The live music sector today: growth and globalisation

Due to the rise of streaming, the live music sector worldwide is currently seeing a major increase in demand and is undergoing a profound process of globalisation.

transformacio_anella_grafic_sector musica

In this context, the Anella Olímpica is embarking on an ambitious transformation process so that Barcelona can address this growing public interest and continue to be a global leader for live music and large-scale cultural and sports events.

In our global world, culture is cementing its role as a cornerstone of social cohesion, encouraging critical thinking, creativity, empathy and innovation. Music in general, and live music in particular, have become the world’s most cross-cutting, multicultural, intergenerational and wide-reaching cultural phenomena.
In Catalonia, the music industry generates €857 million annually, 82% of which comes from live music. The sector is made up of 379 companies that provide over 4,000 jobs.

3.    Barcelona’s positioning: the Anella Olímpica’s value proposition

The new Anella Olímpica is reinforcing its role as a city venue hosting the best shows all year round and for all audiences.
With more accessible connections from the rest of the city, including the L2 metro line reaching the top of Montjuïc, the Anella seeks to go beyond its reputation as a venue bringing the city the best national and international live music and sports to become an everyday setting where Barcelona residents can have a walk, play sports and exercise, as well as enjoy the city’s culture and food with new offerings.

Based on a management model driven by public leadership and public-private partnerships, the new Anella aims to bring the best national and international shows to the people of Barcelona and Catalonia, in a world in which cities are competing to attract top events across a range of sectors.

At the same time, the Anella aims to continue being a platform for projecting local talent to the world, highlighting its close relationship with over 40 local and international event promoters who make each year’s line-up possible.
The Anella has already hosted major international concerts, including Coldplay, Bruce Springsteen, Beyoncé and the world’s first socially distanced live music concert during the pandemic. It’s also seen Estopa, Rosalia, Bad Gyal and many other major names rise to fame. And it’s looking forward to much more.

In 1992, Barcelona showed the world that it can make even the most ambitious dreams come true. The Anella Olímpica was the grand stage for that Olympic dream. Now, over thirty years later, it is once again putting itself at the service of city residents, local talent and international figures.

4.    The transformation of the Sant Jordi Club, an auditorium designed for live music

The first space transforming its value proposition is the Sant Jordi Club, which will become the first large venue in Spain designed to elevate the experience of live music and medium-scale shows.
It will feature first-class technical design designed to guarantee impeccable acoustics, maximum comfort, universal accessibility, energy efficiency, versatility of use and, ultimately, the best experience possible not only for the audience, but also for all people who use it:  artists, event promoters and technical teams.

With a surface area of 16,500 m2, the new Sant Jordi Club will double its current capacity, offering the flexibility to accommodate 3,500 to 9,000 audience members – an option unlike anything else currently available in Barcelona.

To carry out this physical transformation, Barcelona City Council, through BSM, will launch an international architecture contest to convert the Sant Jordi Club into a specially designed venue for live music and medium-scale shows.

The space will also have its own architectural identity in harmony with the Anella Olímpica as a whole, especially the Palau Sant Jordi. Created by architect Arata Isozaki, this venue is an internationally recognised Barcelona landmark renowned for its heritage value.

Ultimately, the goal of the competition is to find innovative architectural designs that prioritise the audience experience and environmental sustainability.

5.    Calling all creatives everywhere

The international competition will be launched on 17 July, and submissions will be accepted up to 30 September 2025. With a €70 million investment, funded entirely by BSM, construction work on the new Sant Jordi Club will begin in mid-2027 and is expected to be completed in 2029.

The project seeks to bolster the Anella Olímpica’s position as a leading venue for live music, sports and other medium- and large-scale events, while also strengthening its connection with the city and the local community. This transformation is part of a series of projects to make Montjuïc and the surrounding neighbourhoods a new urban focal point, green lung and hub for the best cultural and sporting events for all audiences.

The transformation of the Anella Olímpica kicks off with the creation of a new Sant Jordi Club, a unique live music venue

Guns N’Roses, Kendrick Lamar and SZA, Post Malone and Lola Indigo are just a few of the names that will take to the big stage on Montjuïc over the coming months

By the end of the year, the Anella Olímpica will play host to more than 70 concerts with around 740,000 people in attendance

The Anella Olímpica is looking towards the second half of the year with a line-up that confirms its leading position on the international live music circuit. Between the months of June and December, more than 70 national and international artists will stop off at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, the Palau Sant Jordi and the Sant Jordi Club, and for many of them, this will be their only performance in Spain. These concerts will be attended by around 740,000 people.

The season at the Estadi Olímpic will be opened by Guns N'Roses (9 June) in what will be their only concert in Spain. Others who have chosen Estadi Olímpic for their only concert in Spain include rappers Kendrick Lamar and SZA (30 July), Post Malone (12 September) and the K-Pop band Blackpink (9 August), consolidating the Catalan capital as one of the favourite destinations for K-Pop fans.

The Estadi Olímpic season will be rounded off by, among others, big names like Imagine Dragons (1 July) and two national artists: Lola Indigo (10 July) and Aitana (19 July), two important dates considering that, until now, the only national group to have performed at the Estadi Olímpic was Estopa.

When it comes to the line-up at the Palau Sant Jordi in the coming months, highlights include the only concerts in Spain to be played by Billie Eilish (14 and 15 June), Japanese phenomenon ADO (29 June), Lady Gaga (28, 29 and 31 October), Jamiroquai (6 November) and Mumford & Sons (23 November).

Other names that will be stopping off at the Palau Sant Jordi are Rigoberta Bandini (28 June), Rauw Alejandro (11 and 12 July), Juan Luis Guerra (13 July), Jennifer Lopez (15 July), Quevedo (8 and 9 September), Bunbury (18 September), Mora (23 September), Joaquín Sabina (2 and 4 October), Los Pecos (26 October and 28 December), Leiva (8 November), Katy Perry (November 9), Antonio Orozco (28 and 29 November) and Nil Moliner (27 December), among others.

Between June and September, the Sant Jordi Club will play host to artists including Amaral (13 June), Damiano David (21 September), Till Lindemann (13 November) Lágrimas de Sangre (14 and 15 November), Roxette (16 November), Tom Odell (30 November) and Loquillo (27 December).

Commitment to sustainable mobility

Coinciding with the start of the concert season at the Estadi Olímpic, the Anella Olímpica is strengthening its campaign to promote sustainable mobility around Montjuïc.
Under the slogan "Choose the most sustainable way to get there", the Anella Olímpica management recommend using public transport or walking to its facilities. And remember that the new X3 bus line adds to the transport options already available, which include funicular rail, bus, metro and shuttle services, as well as Bicing (public bike hire) and the escalators.

Major tours from national and international artists once again included concerts at the Anella Olímpica last year, consolidating Barcelona as leading European city for live music

The Palau Sant Jordi and the Sant Jordi Club accounted for three quarters of the programme on the site, with nearly a million concert-goers between them

2024 also saw the Estadi Olímpic become part of The Venue Barcelona, the ecosystem for innovative companies in music, sport and major events

The Anella Olímpica (Olympic Ring) closed out another year with record figures. The Palau Sant Jordi, the Sant Jordi Club and the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys had nearly 2.2 million visitors and hosted 172 events, consolidating the good results from 2023.

For the chair of BSM and First Deputy Mayor of Barcelona City Council, Laia Bonet, “last year’s figures once again show the appeal of the Anella Olímpica for international music, sports and entertainment circuits”. Bonet stressed the facility's key contribution in consolidating Barcelona as a leading city for experiencing live music, as well as other large-format events: “The versatility of the Anella Olímpica facilities and the expertise accumulated in organising major events make this BSM-managed municipal facility an essential stop for large national and international tours, as well as for important sports and entertainment events”, she said.

By type, concerts are still the most common event at the complex, accounting for nearly 60% of its programme. There were 99 concerts in all last year, attracting nearly a million concert-goers.
By venue, the Palau Sant Jordi hosted the most events, followed by the Sant Jordi Club. Between them, the two venues hosted 76% of the programme.

Besides concerts, over the course of the year the Anella Olímpica hosted sports events such as the Trial Indoor Barcelona and the Premier Padel, plus other entertainment events such as Disney on Ice, Vine a l’Estadi and 48H Open House Barcelona, among others.

Between concerts and the rest of the programme, the Anella Olímpica received over 1.1 million visitors. On top of this figure, we should add the spectators that attended the 25 matches played by FC Barcelona.

Varied music and entertainment programme catering for all audiences

The healthy figures for 2024 once again demonstrated the Anella Olímpica’s capacity to adapt to new trends in music and entertainment. This effort helps to make the complex a meeting space for a variety of audiences of all ages, year after year.

As a result of this versatility, and also thanks to the alliances with the main promoters in this sector, 2024 saw tour concerts by international artists such as Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen, Aventura, Rammstein and Luis Miguel.

On a national level, the stages at the complex also hosted concerts by the likes of Estopa, Morad, The Tyets, Bad Gyal, Saiko, Joan Dausà and many others.

The average age of spectators attending events at the Anella Olímpica is currently 39. By origin, nearly 90% of visitors live in Catalonia, 8% in other parts of Spain and the other 5% in other countries.

The Venue, meeting point for innovation in music, sport and events

Last year also saw The Venue Barcelona become part of the Anella Olímpica. This centre for innovative companies in the music, sport and major events’ sectors was launched by BSM in conjunction with the Barcelona Institute of Sports (IBE) and is based at the Estadi Olímpic.

The Venue is run by a consortium of companies which, in recent years, have successfully managed projects in areas such as the design and promotion of innovation centres, management of start-up acceleration programmes and developing results-oriented marketing solutions to position companies and businesses in their growth stage.

The centre currently has 20 members representing more than 450 companies, firmly establishing it as a leader in innovation for the music, sport and events’ sectors.

The Anella Olímpica’s main venue is preparing for a month of landmark events: Bruce Springsteen will become the most played artist at the stadium, while Estopa will be the first national group to sell out the venue

The Anella Olímpica will step up its campaign to encourage concert-goers to use sustainable transport to get to the stadium

June will see the start of the concert season at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. Germany’s Rammstein will be the first to bring their music back to the Montjuïc macro-venue with tomorrow’s concert. Next up is Bruce Springsteen, with two shows on 20 and 22 June, followed by Estopa on 10 July as part of their 25th anniversary tour. That’s four concerts in all, which together are expected to attract more than 200,000 people to the stadium.

This year’s concert season at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys includes events that will go down in the history of the venue. Bruce Springsteen’s two concerts will make him the most played artist of all time at the Olympic stadium, with a total of eight appearances. For their part, Estopa will be the first national artists to fill the venue.

This year’s programme at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys also confirms the venue’s contribution to making Barcelona a leading city for major international tours. According to Pollstar, four of the top five tours in terms of revenue will have concerts at the stadium between 2023 and 2024 (Bruce Springsteen, Beyoncé, Coldplay and Harry Styles).

The stadium’s music programme also has a positive impact on the city’s economy, attracting visitors from all over the world. Currently, 12% of the stadium’s audience is international, while 36% comes from other parts of Spain.

Promoting sustainable mobility to the Estadi Olímpic

With the start of the stadium’s concert season, the Anella Olímpica is stepping up its efforts to promote sustainable mobility to the venue and make further progress in hosting sustainable events.

The campaign ‘The Estadi Olímpic is very close. Choose the most sustainable way to get there’ promotes the use of public transport and walking, recommending the use of bus stops, metro stops, the funicular railway and the FGC stops closest to Parc de Montjuïc. The campaign also draws attention to the increased frequency of the 150 bus service between Plaça d’Espanya and Castell de Montjuïc, as well as the special TMB bus service from the stadium to Plaça d’Espanya on concert days. The escalators in Parc de Montjuïc will also be extended on concert days.

Thanks to these measures, the use of private cars to get to the stadium has been reduced in recent years, helping to improve mobility and reduce emissions.

A multi-purpose space

With the arrival of these music tours, the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys will have a very busy first half of 2024. In the first six months of the year, the stadium hosted 10 major sporting events and three iterations of the ‘Vine a l’Estadi’ programme, an initiative inviting people to visit the stadium free of charge and discover its history. More than 800 people took part in these visits.

In addition to maintaining its position as a leading international cultural and sports venue, this year the stadium also launched The Venue Barcelona, a new business ecosystem for companies in the sports, culture and major events sectors, helping to position the Anella Olímpica as an innovation hub for these sectors.

The agreement makes the Palau Sant Jordi and the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys the first major events venues in Europe to join the European initiative to prevent irregular ticket sales

On Thursday, the Anella Olímpica formally joined the Face-value European Alliance for Ticketing (FEAT), the European organisation that brings together promoters and operators from the culture sector to combat the resale of tickets at inflated prices. The agreement makes the Palau Sant Jordi and the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys the first major events venues in Europe to join the European initiative.

Since its creation in 2019, FEAT has promoted a number of Europe-wide initiatives to encourage the introduction of laws that protect fans and promoters. The organisation has also headed information campaigns to encourage members of the public to buy their tickets from secure sales channels and to warn them of the dangers of buying tickets through unauthorised resale channels, where they might be sold at a much higher price and where they might even be sold fake tickets.

Currently, 69% of tickets that are resold in Spain are sold at inflated prices, according to figures from FEAT.

The director of the Anella Olímpica, Carme Lanuza, says that “the resale of tickets has a direct impact on the venues and, through our alliance with FEAT, we are reaffirming our commitment to offering unique and secure public experiences. It is essential that all agents in the sector join forces to put an end to this practice”.

For his part, the founding director of FEAT and CEO of Doctor Music, Neo Sala, says that “the Anella Olímpica venues are a hugely important part of Barcelona's cultural ecosystem and they attract major artists from all over the world to the city. It’s great news that they are getting involved in FEAT’s mission to combat the resale of tickets at inflated prices and that they are working to protect fans from the abusive practices of ticket touts.

Now that it has joined FEAT, the Anella Olímpica will be working with live events professionals from all over Europe who form part of the alliance to promote the ethical, transparent and fair sale of tickets and to combat the resale of tickets at vastly inflated prices through unauthorised channels.

Protocols to combat ticket touting

The Anella Olímpica has protocols in place to identify unauthorised tickets at the events it hosts and to support those affected by it. When they identify tickets that are fake or have been bought through unauthorised channels, the professionals at the venue provide the visitors with access to the complaints service and advise them on how to make their complaint.

With more than 160 events held and 2.1 million visitors in 2023, the Palau Sant Jordi and the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys are leading venues for European cultural and sports events and they play a key role in positioning Barcelona as a major events city.

The opening event brought together around 100 representatives of companies, start-ups and organisations from sectors associated with the activities of the business centre's ecosystem. They all participated in work sessions aimed at coming up with joint solutions to some of the challenges facing the major events, sports and music industries; needs that entail other related activities such as mobility, sustainability and water management, promotion, marketing and catering, and the application of new technologies to create new experiences targeted at fans and consumers.

In these sessions, The Venue Barcelona has advanced some of its projects to foster dialogue among the resident and the partner companies to generate new products and services that will be tested and implemented, in coordination with BSM, at the venues in the Anella Olímpica, including the Palau Sant Jordi and the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys.
