The Club began work in December 2022, combining updates with programmed events at the stadium over the last few months

The Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys is ready for Tuesday's game against Tottenham Hotspur for the Joan Gamper Trophy. As such, FC Barcelona have virtually completed all the necessary updates to their home ground until 2024 whilst construction work is carried out at Spotify Camp Nou. The Club has had to combine this work with existing events at the Estadi Olímpic in the last few months and one or two things still to be ready for the game against the Premier League club and before the team's first home game of the La Liga season on 20 August against Cádiz. 

The work for the Espai Barça project is moving forward within the schedule set out and, as part of the rental agreement for the stadium with Barcelona City Council via the company Barcelona de Serveis Municipals (BSM), who oversee the Estadi Olímpic, the Club began work to update the ground in December 2022. Areas that have undergone the greatest change include hospitality areas, the VIP box, the press areas, the dressing rooms and the pitch. Furthemore, the draining and water system has been updated as have broadcast facilities for television. The work has been necessary for the stadium to meet the Club's need and the requirements of La Liga and international competition. 

Other updates at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys include changes to the floodlighting, preinstallation of access gates, telecommunication networks and mounting commentary positions for television.  Also, work related to the relocating of seats in the stands in the current exit channels for concerts, installation of seats in the VIP areas and the systems for sporting competition - VAR, tracking cameras and offside cameras - and the placing of dugouts and goalposts. Furthermore, tickets offices have been created, along with merchandising areas and an OAB. 

Updates in phases 

The work to update the stadium began in December 2022 with a schedule organised by phases. The first was from the beginning date until 18 April; the second came about between already programmed events at the stadium, first between 4-12 May and the second between 11 June and 3 July. The final phases began on 24 July and comes to an end with the opening league fixture against Cádiz on 20 August. 

Transport plan for Montjuïc

FC Barcelona has worked with Barcelona City Council on a Transport Plan for people wanting to attend matches at Montjuïc. Fans should leave for the stadium in good time and three hours before kick off access to be private vehicles will be restricted. Traffic around the stadium will be stopped and around the Olympic Area only accredited four wheeled vehicles will be permitted. The local police will impound vehicles parked in unauthorised zones. A total of 3,500 motorcycles will be allowed to access the area and park near the stadium. 

Fans are recommended to travel to the stadium on foot, by public transport of by bicycle and avoid the use of private vehicles where possible. Fans are also asked to download their ticket beforehand and enter by the correct gate and access point. There will be left luggage facility.

Tibidabo is launching a new show, 'The Mascots for Barcelona' this August

Returning to Tibidabo, the star attraction of the summer is the Laser Show. Starting on Wednesday, 2 August, people visiting the Amusement Park can end their day in the best way possible: with an experience that blends lights, colours, and music.

The show will take place in Plaça dels Somnis on Wednesday to Sunday evenings in August at 9.30 pm. More than a decade after its debut, it continues to surprise visitors, turning into a unique nighttime experience. Entitled the 'Laser Show 2.0', the performance will offer an audiovisual demonstration of musical animations that play with light and sound effects and contrast with Barcelona’s urban silhouette.

Initiatives such as this enable Tibidabo to combine its emblematic essence with creating new experiences based on innovation and technology. This formula has also been applied to two of the season's new proposals: the incorporation of virtual reality into the Roller Coaster and the immersive virtual reality attraction Beyond, launched last June, which has already been enjoyed by more than 3,500 people.  

The Mascots of Tibidabo debut a new show 

The Amusement Park mascots won't be taking a holiday in August. On Wednesday 2, they will debut a new performance, 'The Mascots for Barcelona'. Through songs and activities, Ti, Bi, Da and Bo will share with the families visiting the Park everything they have lived, learned and experienced on the streets of Barcelona. It will take place every evening from 7 pm in Plaça del Jardí.

This new addition joins the summer activity schedule prepared by the Park. Other highlights include puppet shows at the Marionetarium as well as screenings of the films 'Meg and the Lost Scepter' and 'Wanted Alive' in 4D at the Dididado cinema. More fun than ever in August

Tibidabo extends its opening hours during August. From Wednesday to Sunday, as well as Tuesday 15 August, which is a public holiday, the Park will be open from 11 am to 10 pm.

The Nature Passport, aimed at Zoo Club members, launches an activity about felines

The new Ludo Zoo area has been well received in these first months of summer, and in August, it will be open from 3 pm to 4.30 pm

Barcelona Zoo faces an August full of activities. The Nature Passport for Zoo Club members, the new Ludo Zoo library area, meet-ups with zookeepers, and themed clubs are some of the activities on the Zoo’s agenda.

One of the most popular activities is the Nature Passport, aimed at Zoo Club members. Throughout August, it will continue to schedule exclusive, free activities on biodiversity and its conservation. 

Highlights include a new workshop that introduces the world of felines, during which the European wildcat conservation project is explained, a project that the Zoo is collaborating through the Zoo Foundation. Aside from that, in 'Discovering the Zoo', Zoo Club members can learn first hand in an enjoyable and educational way what zoos do to protect the planet's biodiversity, while exploring species and natural habitats. 

Another popular offering is 'Primates and humans, cousin species', which focuses on the study of primates as a tool to enhance participants’ observation skills

The Passport activities last between 30 and 45 minutes and must be reserved in advance through the Zoo Club user area on the Zoo's website.

The new Ludo Zoo, a space for learning

The Ludo Zoo area, with library service, has been very well received by visitors since its inauguration in June. It is animated by the Zoo's team of educators and is located in the Welcome Classroom. The new space offers a calm environment for researching and learning about the planet's biodiversity through books, games, and other reference materials.

In August, it will be open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 3 pm to 4.30 pm.

Meetings with zookeepers, workshops, and storytelling 

The August programme also includes new experiences with the zookeepers that complement the visits for all guests, introducing them to everyday reality at the Zoo and the conservation work carried out there. 

On Friday to Sunday mornings, those who wish to can visit the Invertebrates Space laboratory with the zookeepers and meet species such as sea lions, bison, giant turtles, or hippos. 

In addition, the Barcelona Zoo also schedules storytelling sessions every midday from Wednesday to Sunday at the Dama del Paraigua square. Respect for nature is encouraged through stories and traditional folk tales from around the world featuring animals.

All activities, which are updated weekly, can be viewed on the Zoo's website and on the QR codes of the various informational signs at the Zoo itself.

A hundred Spanish toothcarp have been released into two new ponds created this year

The move comes as part of the agreements signed between these bodies to protect biodiversity and create nuclei populated with this species to ensure its long-term continuity

The initiative is part of the project to recover the Spanish toothcarp, promoted by the Consortium for the Protection and Management of Natural Spaces in the Llobregat Delta

Barcelona Zoo Foundation, Damm and the Llobregat Delta Consortium released 100 Spanish toothcarp into the Llobregat Delta yesterday. The release is included in the current collaboration agreement between organisations forming part of the education plan to save the species, an initiative which seeks to raise awareness about the situation of this Mediterranean fish, declared as in danger of extinction. 

The fish released yesterday were born at Barcelona Zoo. They were released at two new ponds created this year with the collaboration of Viladecans Town Council, dug to the size and depth recommended by experts on this species, the goal being to make the release as successful as possible.

Until now, the Llobregat Delta only had two ponds with small established populations of Spanish toothcarp, a species endemic to the Iberian Peninsula and critically endangered. The goal of the plan to recover the Spanish toothcarp in the Llobregat Delta focuses on the creation of new population nuclei in different wetland areas, ensuring the long-term continuity of the species. The Barcelona Zoo Foundation is helping by breeding the species, improving its habitats, studying the ecological requisites for the species and monitoring its evolution over time.

Five years committed to the reintroduction of the Spanish toothcarp The Barcelona Zoo Foundation has been committed to the reintroduction of the Spanish toothcarp into its natural habitat since 2018 in collaboration with the Consortium for the Protection and Management of Natural Spaces in the Llobregat Delta. The project has also had the support of Damm since 2021.

The first step to recover the species’ habitat came in February 2019 with digging a pond in the coastal pine wood in the municipality of El Prat de Llobregat, in the same location as the only established population of Spanish toothcarp. The positive results enabled further progress and the creation of the two ponds, which yesterday became home for the hundred new fish.

The Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys is hosting The Weeknd's 'After Hours Til Dawn Tour' on Thursday, 20 July. To coincide with the concert, the Anella Olímpica and the City Council are resuming their information campaign, “The Estadi Olímpic is very close. Choose the most sustainable way of getting there”, to promote sustainable mobility to get to Montjuïc mountain. 

People going to the Estadi Olímpic are recommended to use public transport or go on foot, and to go early. The estadiolimpic.barcelona website offers a series of practical information on how to get to Montjuïc mountain by public transport, along with advice and recommendations concerning accessibility and safety, among other resources of interest. 

Get to the Estadi Olímpic well in advance 

The doors open at 6 pm. It is important to get to Montjuïc early so that people do not all arrive at once. You should check for any updates on the concert start time on the Estadi Olímpic website or the social media for the Stadium, the Palau Sant Jordi and the concert promoter.

Prioritising the use of public transport and travelling on foot 

You should use public transport (Bus, Metro, Funicular or FGC) to the stations and stops closest to Montjuïc Park (Espanya, Poble Sec, Paral·lel or Foc) and then, if possible, use the signposted pedestrian routes. 

You can find information on the various public transport lines available (Bus, Metro, Funicular, FGC) on the Estadi Olímpic, Palau Sant Jordi, TMB and FGC websites, as well as the SMOU application. 

Extra services on the 150 Bus line and shuttle bus service

TMB will be offering extra buses on Line 150 (Pl. Espanya – Castell de Montjuïc) on the days of the concert, during regular traffic times. It will also be providing a special bus service between the Estadi Olímpic and Plaça d’Espanya.

Escalators will be in operation for longer

To facilitate travel on foot, the escalators will continue operating until 2 am. 

Parking restrictions for private vehicles

To coincide with the concerts, there will be a special operation in place, coordinated by the Guàrdia Urbana police force and Civic Officers, limiting street parking on the signposted sections of Avinguda de l’Estadi, Passeig Olímpic, Passeig del Migdia and the streets of Jocs del 92 and Doctor Font i Quer, along with various parking areas located around the Anella Olímpica. People are advised to prioritise travel by public transport to ensure fluid traffic flows and to reduce polluting emissions.

How to get to the Estadi Olímpic

The Zoo’s keepers are adopting special measures to ensure the health and well-being of animals during episodes of intense heat

Increased refills of drinking troughs, free access to shelters in facilities and the inclusion of ice in the diet of some species are a few examples of the measures being implemented

The measures applied in response to the drought are helping to save 200 m3 of water every day

Putting animal well-being and health at the centre, Zoo de Barcelona is implementing special measures this summer to mitigate the effects of the rise in temperatures on its animals. These steps are increased during episodes of intense heat such as the one we are currently experiencing and complement the daily care routines that keepers provide for all the species at the Zoo.  

While the abundance of vegetation ensures that average temperatures recorded at the Zoo are some three degrees below those in the rest of the city, when the heat really kicks in Zoo de Barcelona activates a special protocol with several measures aimed principally at stopping the effects that the heat can have on the various species. 

According to Zoo de Barcelona’s director, Antoni Alarcon, “the measures we are presently taking are a further sign of Zoo de Barcelona’s firm commitment to the well-being of all the species found there, as well as an example of our rapid capacity for adapting to environmental changes”. The protocol for high temperatures means taking steps linked to the basic areas of animal well-being. “Among other things, we give priority to maintaining comfortable temperatures in habitats , strive to keep animals properly hydrated and take all the steps needed to ensure they can continue following their usual behaviour habits in the best possible conditions, such as bathing in the case of the most aquatic species”, he explains.

In contrast to what goes on at other times of the year, when temperatures are high, the Zoo ensures its animals can access the shelters or indoor areas of their enclosures whenever they wish, keeping the gates open at all times to reduce the effects of the heat. 
Guaranteeing the animals are properly hydrated is another of the Zoo’s priorities. Its team of keepers refill drinking troughs more often to keep them fresh. They also increase the number of drinking troughs available to the animals. In addition, the Zoo steps up work to clean and replenish bathing areas that some species have in their enclosures, a practice repeated in mud patches, which play an important role regulating temperatures for animals such as warthogs, rhinoceroses and elephants.

In other cases, such as those of elephants, bison and forest buffalo, staff at the Zoo freshen up facilities with hose pipes. In some cases, such as the red pandas, this activity is carried out with sprinklers. In contrast, fans can be installed in feline and bear habitats to improve the condition of the air in their enclosures.

Food is another aspect that Zoo de Barcelona’s keepers adapt and take very much into consideration over the hotter months. Examples here include iced fruit and broth offered to the primates; fruit mixed with ice cubes for the giraffes; and worm-based iced drinks for the mongooses and meerkats. 

The Zoo's commitment to sustainability and saving water

Zoo de Barcelona is implementing these measures despite the current drought, as its particular idiosyncrasies mean it is exempt from some of the water-saving measures in place under the drought risk protocol being applied by Ajuntament de Barcelona for the current exceptional situation. Despite this exemption, and consistent with its commitment to sustainability and reducing the impact of its activity, the Zoo has applied several measures which are helping to save 200 cubic metres of water a day, a quantity equivalent to the daily water consumption of 1,800 Barcelona residents. 

As in many other spaces in the city, the Zoo is abiding by the restrictions on watering lawns and grasslands and also shutting down its ornamental fountains. Other measures include the introduction of a system to monitor water consumption in real time to detect possible leaks at any time, plus the closure of one of the two main water supply lines to the site, to reduce pressure and consumption. The Zoo generally opts to plant species of vegetation that are suited to the Mediterranean climate.

BSM adjudicates three new catering projects, in line with plans for a culinary model that is attractive to various consumer profiles and based on quality, diversity and a commitment to sustainable, healthy food

Port Olímpic's culinary offer will be completed in mid-2024, once the three gastronomic shops and one more restaurant have been adjudicated 

The second phase of construction work on the Gastronomic Balcony begins this July, once the demolition of the old structures on Moll de Gregal has been completed

The Port Olímpic continues to shape its new catering model based on the Gastronomic Balcony. BSM has allocated three new catering projects that are in line with its commitment to catering for various consumer profiles based on quality, diversity and a commitment to healthy, sustainable food. 

These three projects were selected under the same criteria used in last year’s public tender: quality, the style of cooking and produce, the proposed interior design and ambience and the sustainability measures established to reduce the activity's impact on the surrounding area. A total of 7 projects were presented, from which the following options were selected: 

• World Cooking - innovation: El Tribut 
• Flexitarian food: Super Local 
• Cafeteria: Casa Carmen 

This second batch of adjudications joins the culinary projects allocated at the end of 2022, a process that formally allocated 7 of the 11 restaurants making up the Gastronomic Balcony. 

The remaining culinary establishments in the new Port Olímpic will be finalised at the beginning of 2024, once the last restaurant and the three food shops have been allocated. The latter will be three establishments that will act as complements to the culinary offer provided by the restaurants. 

The Gastronomic Balcony will make Port Olímpic a unique restaurant area on the Barcelona seafront, where you will be able to find everything from innovative fusion-cuisine options to market cuisine with Mediterranean roots. Varied and complementary menus for all kinds of occasions.

Quality cooking in a privileged, architecturally-innovative location

The second phase of construction work on the Gastronomic Balcony begins this July, once the demolition of the existing structures on Moll de Gregal has been completed. The new area covers a total surface area of 24,000 m2, 8,000 of which will be used for restaurants. 

The redevelopment will define a unique, innovative location without any obstacles, and as with other areas of the Port, this will facilitate a dialogue between the city, port activities and the Barcelona seashore. At the end of the Passeig Marítim, and all along a wide boulevard equipped with relaxation areas and viewpoints, four top-class restaurants will be built, located on a platform projecting out over the sea, which will further increase the sensation of openness and proximity to the seashore. Meanwhile, the restaurants located on the port side will have wide terraces built under the photovoltaic pergolas that form the roofing of the Gastronomic Balcony. In all cases, the new interior spaces will be defined by light and transparency, thanks to the use of materials such as glass, which will provide views of the sea and port facilities. 

In order to facilitate accessibility between the two areas, there will be three vertical access areas with steps and lifts. The new culinary centre will also have a direct connection to Nova Icària Beach. 

Construction of the Gastronomic Balcony is scheduled for completion at the end of summer in 2024 to coincide with the start of the America's Cup sailing competition; the Port Olímpic will be used as the base for the youth and women's competitions.

The charity event, organised by the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation (FEM), aims to raise awareness about the people who suffer from this disease and their families

Zoo de Barcelona will also 'get wet' for multiple sclerosis. On Sunday, 9 July, the Zoo will participate for the first time in the 'Get wet for multiple sclerosis' charity event to raise awareness regarding people with multiple sclerosis. The Zoo is collaborating by offering reduced-price tickets and organising a variety of activities for all audiences with aquatic animals and their caregivers.

Now in its 30th year, this initiative is organised annually by the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation (FEM) throughout Catalonia and aims to raise awareness of this chronic neurodegenerative disease, which affects more than 9,000 people in Catalonia.

General admission tickets to the Zoo can be purchased at a reduced price, with a 20% discount off the regular price. Adult tickets will be available at €17.10, and children’s tickets (from 3 to 12 years) at €10.25. Both include a donation to the FEM in the ticket price. Tickets can be purchased in advance on the Zoo website and on the day of the event (9 July) at the Zoo box office.

Part of the money raised from the specially priced tickets will be donated to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation (FEM). Money raised this year will be allocated to programmes and services for people in an advanced stage of the disease, during which the affected person's autonomy gradually diminishes. 

Special activities throughout the day 

During the charity event, the Zoo de Barcelona will organise a series of activities for all audiences. From 10.15 to 11.00 h, the workshop 'Aquatic invertebrates laboratory’ will take place in the Invertebrate Space, where thanks to the Zoo staff, attendees will be able to discover the world of these curious species. From 11.30 am to 12.00 pm, with the help of caregivers, the public will be able to observe the sea lions and learn how they can contribute to the preservation of aquatic species during the event 'Let's meet the sea lions!'. Lastly, the workshop 'What do penguins eat?’ will take place from 12.15 pm to 12.45 pm, where you can learn more about the importance of nutrition for this species and why each penguin receives a personalised diet.

These activities are free, and no reservation is required to participate.

Zoo de Barcelona, a space committed to solidarity

On 15 July, the Zoo will also host the charity event 'Put on your hat' organised jointly with the Association of Relatives and Friends of Oncological Children of Catalonia (AFANOC). This activity aims to increase understanding of the reality of children and adolescents with cancer and their families—normalising the disease and addressing the needs arising from a cancer diagnosis.

For more than twenty years, the Zoo has collaborated with the AFANOC in the celebration of this initiative. This year, visitors who purchase an Association’s cap will have a 60% discount on the usual Zoo admission cost. Part of the profits obtained from the sale of these tickets will also be allocated to the organisation’s projects.
