BSM has launched the first series of talks in collaboration with the College of Industrial Engineers of Catalonia, creating a space to address key issues such as climate change, energy, the circular economy, and innovation

BSM, together with the College of Industrial Engineers of Catalonia, has launched 'Converses BSM,' a new series of talks in which representatives and experts from the public and private sectors reflect on Barcelona's main challenges and solutions.

The Port Olímpic was the setting for the first session, which focused on climate change. The event brought together companies and organisations from the sector to exchange ideas and discuss how existing infrastructure can be adapted to the climate emergency.

The first 'Converses BSM' featured contributions from experts who shared their experience and perspectives on climate change, including Carlo Buontempo, Director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service at ECMWF; Esther Garcés, researcher at the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM) – CSIC; Marc d'Oliva, Chair of the Climate Change and Circular Economy Commission of the College of Industrial Engineers of Catalonia; and David Serrano, Corporate Director of ESG and Integrated Management System at BSM.

Marta Labata, CEO of BSM, and Maria Salamero, President of the Association of Industrial Engineers of Catalonia, welcomed attendees and highlighted the importance of initiatives like this, focused on public-private collaboration, in jointly addressing the current and future challenges facing Barcelona and the wider world.

A space for reflection where the public and private sectors come together

In addition to climate change, this first series has addressed key issues such as energy, the circular economy, and innovation. Through dialogue and the participation of opinion leaders, the new forum aims to generate shared knowledge and encourage decision-making by the public authorities, businesses, and key strategic stakeholders.

And with this initiative, BSM is fostering strategic debate, joint collaboration, and the creation of new synergies with the aim of building an innovative, sustainable, and more resilient Barcelona, ready to face present and future challenges.
 

This renovation is part of a broader project to improve accessibility over the entire mountain and will continue with the replacement of the escalators running from Plaça de Carles Buïgas to Passeig de Jean Claude Nicolas Forestier

The replacement works for all sections of the escalators, partially funded by the Next Generation funds under the Barcelona Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan, are scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2026

First section of the new escalators at Parc Montjuïc is now in operation. Specifically, escalators 9, 10, 19, and 20 have been replaced, improving access to the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC) from Carrer de la Guàrdia Urbana.  This renovation, partially funded by the Next Generation funds as part of the Barcelona Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan, forms part of a broader project to replace all escalators providing access to the park, with the aim of significantly improving accessibility over the entire mountain. 

'The new escalators improve connections with the cultural and sports facilities on the mountain and enhance the experience for both residents and visitors, making Parc Montjuïc a more open, integrated, and easily accessible space', said Laia Bonet, President of BSM and First Deputy Mayor of Barcelona City Council. She also stressed that 'this renovation not only improves urban mobility but also represents a step forward in terms of sustainability and energy efficiency'.

BSM, which is leading the project, expects to complete the replacement of all escalators in the first quarter of 2026. To stay on track with the established schedule, work has already begun on replacing the central escalators running from Plaça de Carles Buïgas to Passeig de Jean Claude Nicolas Forestier (sections 3-5-7 and 4-6-8). 

The replacement of these two sections will be carried out in stages to ensure there are some escalators in operation, allowing visitors to go up or down the mountain as needed. Therefore, work on escalators 4, 6 and 8 will not begin until the new escalators 3, 5 and 7 are operational. Replacement of all the central section is expected to be completed by the third quarter of this year. 

A step forward in accessibility and energy efficiency

The new model of escalators, which will be gradually installed throughout the park, is more energy-efficient and sustainable. It also features a remote control and monitoring system that will optimise performance and ensure continuous availability. This marks another step forward for Parc Montjuïc, an iconic space where residents and visitors can enjoy sport and attend cultural and sports events, in improving accessibility to the mountain and reducing its carbon footprint.

The second edition of the Barcelona Electric Marine Show, the sustainable sailing event organised by the Port Olímpic and the Asociación Nacional de Barcos Eléctricos (ANBE), is underway and will be at the Port’s Moll de Mestral wharf from 3 to 5 April. 

BSM’s CEO, Marta Labata, and Port Olímpic director Olga Cerezo, along with the chair of the ANBE, Gonzalo Coterillo, and the association’s manager, Marilena Estarellas, were tasked with getting the three-day event under way at an opening ceremony with participants that included the Clúster Marítim de les Illes Balears, the International Electric Marine Association (INBE), Port de Barcelona, Marinas de España and other representatives of the maritime sector. 

Labata stressed “the Port Olímpic’s commitment to sustainability and the ANBE’s commitment to carbon-free and environmentally friendly sailing”. BSM’s CEO also acknowledged “the ANBE’s trust in the Port Olímpic as a space to develop synergies for tackling the challenge of climate change”. 

Under the slogan “Connecting Land and Sea for a Sustainable Future”, the Barcelona Electric Marine Show will welcome international groups such as TEMO France, ePropulsion and Water World, all specialists in electric propulsion systems for boats. 

At the Moll de Mestral wharf, a spacious exhibition features pioneering projects such as Dhamma Blue’s first hydrogen-powered electric boat, a sustainable catamaran by the Mallorcan company V2 and Europe’s first 3D-printed catamaran, which is fully electric and recyclable.

Innovative boat-charging solutions will also be on display. These include the Catalan firm VEGA Chargers, showcasing the latest developments in charging systems, and the Mallorcan company SUNDOCK, which has designed a floating pontoon that enables boats to be charged using photovoltaic energy. 

The Barcelona Electric Marine Show also features a dedicated space for retrofitting solutions, the process of turning combustion-powered boats into electric or hybrid vessels. 

A forum for dialogue on the decarbonisation of boating 

The event will also include a programme of talks and roundtables on sustainable boating and the energy transition, organised in collaboration with the International Electric Marine Association (IEMA). These sessions are taking place in the Mestral Auditorium and explore topics such as the challenges of electric mobility in boating and how to make port infrastructure and nautical tourism more sustainable.

Workshops and shows to bring sustainable sailing closer to children

The Barcelona Electric Marine Show will be opening up to families too on Saturday, 5 April, with a programme of workshops and shows for people of all ages. The Port Olímpic will become a place of fun and recreation from 10 am to 7 pm, where young and old can enjoy activities based around the sea and the environment. All the activities are free and will take place at the Moll de Mestral wharf. 

Families will be able to explore throughout the day, learning about sea species and conducting experiments with microplastics. There will also be a chance to enjoy artistic workshops, such as painting bookmarks with nautical illustrations or drawing your own ocean. Other activities include environmental awareness workshops, with one offering a “Marine wordsearch”, where participants can have fun discovering vocabulary linked to the sea.

Participants can also enjoy Salvamar Cirkus at 12 noon, a show combining humour, circus and environmental awareness.

Bringing sustainable boating closer to the general public

On Saturday 5 April, the Barcelona Electric Marine Show will open its doors to families, with a programme of educational and awareness-raising activities focused on marine ecosystems and the importance of keeping our seas and oceans clean. 
Visitors will also be able to enjoy a comedy show inspired by the sea and experience electric sailing first-hand with boat trips aboard some of the vessels on display.

A leading port in sustainability, anticipating the effects of climate change 

With this latest edition of the Barcelona Electric Marine Show, the Port Olímpic reaffirms its commitment to becoming a benchmark for sustainability. Energy efficiency, renewable self-consumption, circularity and the promotion of biodiversity have all been key elements in the transformation of the Port Olímpic, which was led by BSM on behalf of Barcelona City Council. 

Since its inauguration in summer 2024, the Port Olímpic has featured a large photovoltaic pergola that guarantees self-sufficiency across the entire port and, in a second phase, will supply energy to other nearby BSM facilities. It will be the city’s largest shared self-consumption system. This 3,560 m² installation, located on the Moll de Gregal, generates the equivalent of the average consumption of 360 households. Additionally, the port uses seawater for its climate control system.

The Port Olímpic has installed two ultra-fast charging points for electric boats from Endolla Barcelona – the first in the country to be powered by photovoltaic energy generated on site. It has also introduced bioregenerative reefs and gabions along the Sea Wall and within the port’s own waters to enhance marine biodiversity in the area.

The port’s design also considers the impacts of climate change, such as storms and rising sea levels. The Sea Wall has been reinforced to guard against possible overtopping, and work is currently under way to replace the concrete pontoons with floating ones. 

The Port Olímpic’s commitment to decarbonisation and promoting the electrification of boating, self-consumption and seabed regeneration was recognised in 2024 by the Sustainable Boating Awards promoted by ANBE.

The event, organised by BSM and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya – BarcelonaTech (UPC), attracted more than 1,500 students in their fourth year of compulsory secondary education (ESO) and baccalaureate

For the first time at these events, the students were able to experiment with some basic principles of physics with a Municipal Tow Service truck

This morning, Parc del Fòrum hosted a new edition of the STEAM event organised by BSM and the Escola d’Enginyeria de Barcelona Est (EEBE) at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya – BarcelonaTech (UPC). This time, more than 1,500 students in their fourth year of compulsory secondary education (ESO) and baccalaureate from 36 schools in Barcelona and other parts of Catalonia were able to enjoy a morning of science where they were able to learn about young people’s opportunities in STEAM disciplines.

For the first time at this event, the students were able to experiment with basic principles of physics with a Municipal Tow Service truck, while also learning how this service contributes to guaranteeing smooth traffic in the city. Specifically, the students simulated double-parking and saw all the consequences – a traffic jam, safety compromised, pollution, etc. – until the tow truck arrived. The tow truck was also used to give a practical demonstration, with a live show, of the basic principles of physics that enable vehicles to be lifted and taken away. Specifically, when lifting a motorcycle, the students learned more about Newton's third law and how the pneumatic circuits that allow tow trucks to lift very heavy weights work. 

In addition to these new activities, throughout the entire morning the Parc del Fòrum also offered other activities, workshops and shows related to subjects such as science, technology, engineering, the arts and maths. The participants in this STEAM event also learned Newton’s laws through the new dance function, found out how to use Ohm’s law in a real circuit, discovered the scope and operation of air-propelled rockets and experienced the effects of alcohol consumption on perception of the environment, among other activities. 

Dynamic activities in iconic city venues  

The STEAM events, promoted by BSM and the UPC for seven academic years now, offer positive, high-quality educational experiences which encourage technical vocations among students, especially girls.  

To continue sharing these disciplines with the younger generations, a total of six STEAM events have been scheduled throughout school year 2024-2025, all of them at iconic city venues such as Zoo de Barcelona, Park Güell, Anella Olímpica and Tibidabo. A total of 7,750 primary and secondary school students are forecast to participate in the initiative, 10% more than last year. The next session will be on 14 March at Parc d’Atraccions Tibidabo.

The new space allows visitors to learn about endangered species and the Zoo de Barcelona’s role in conserving biodiversity

Through immersive images, games and discovery, children and adults alike will learn what they can do to preserve biodiversity and the importance of responsible animal ownership  

Cuida’ls is partly funded by the Biodiversidad Foundation of the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge as part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan from the EU Next Generation Funds

Zoo de Barcelona is launching Cuida’ls, an immersive experience that encourages children and adults alike to protect biodiversity. Located near the Parc de la Ciutadella entrance, this new activity welcomes visitors with a fun, interactive way to learn how to get involved in preserving species and ecosystems. 

With the launch of Cuida’ls, Zoo de Barcelona is continuing its in-depth transformation to become a space where both children and adults can connect with nature through educational, playful and enjoyable experiences while also getting involved in biodiversity conservation. This transformation is moving forward alongside the future Ciutadella Knowledge Hub, which will make the Parc de la Ciutadella and its environs a cutting-edge node of knowledge, outreach, research and innovation in Europe. 'The new Cuida’ls space aims to be the entryway to the new zoo model, which focuses on outreach and educating visitors on how to preserve our biodiversity’, said Barcelona’s mayor, Jaume Collboni. He also stressed that the aim is to turn the site where the zoo and the new space are located—Parc de la Ciutadella—into the ‘Ciutadella Knowledge Hub in the broad sense of innovation, culture and science’.

Two avatars accompany visitors and invite them to get involved in caring for nature 

Cuida’ls is a new 230 m2 installation divided into three rooms: a first immersive room where visitors can learn what biodiversity is, and two rooms with interactive elements where they can take action and learn how to preserve the environment. In the immersive room, the avatars of a zookeeper, Alba, and her companion, an otter, welcome visitors and accompany them on a journey through time to discover the origins of life, the richness of different ecosystems and the many threats endangering biodiversity, including poaching, pollution, fires and the overexploitation of resources. 

At the end of the immersive presentation, Alba and the otter invite visitors to move to the second room and engage with interactive digital content to learn about real cases of illegal animal trade and the collaborative work of organisations, bodies and security forces such as the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) and the Mossos d’Esquadra to prevent this illegal trafficking of wildlife. This room also contains replicas of real confiscated items and explains the Zoo de Barcelona’s role as a member of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), an international agreement that aims to prevent the illegal trafficking of species, which allows Zoo de Barcelona to act as a rescue centre and shelter for animals seized by public administrations. Thanks to this agreement, Zoo de Barcelona has become a new home for many confiscated animals.  

In addition, this second room has interactive elements that allow visitors to discover some species’ degree of conservation via the classification made by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the international organisation devoted to preserving biodiversity. It also uses fun digital elements to explain how Zoo de Barcelona and the Barcelona Zoo Foundation contribute to the conservation of certain endangered autochthonous species through numerous projects both in and outside their natural habitats. For example, there are displays on the Montseny brook newt conservation project, the TUROCAT project to reintroduce the European polecat and initiatives to recover populations of Spanish toothcarp, Mallorcan midwife toad and Hermann’s tortoise, among others.   

Finally, the third room is designed to inspire visitors to take direct action. Equipped with digital interactive elements, it provides information about the Barcelona Pet Shelter (CAACB) and explains how they can collaborate or contribute to caring for the animals there. In this last room, visitors can also formalise their commitment to preserving biodiversity by drawing an animal that will be projected like an avatar on the big screen outside the Cuida’ls space, simulating its reintroduction.

The new Cuida’ls space involved an investment of €1.1 million, partly supplied by the Biodiversidad Foundation of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge as part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan from the EU Next Generation Funds. 

A new space adapted to all ages and open to schools

This space was designed to meet the needs of the different age groups that visit Zoo de Barcelona, with a special focus on children and young people. Some content is intended to introduce children to basic concepts such as biodiversity and today’s major challenges, while other resources are more complex to help young people learn more about these same topics. 
Starting this summer, Cuida’ls will have an activity programme to supplement visits, and in the 2025-2026 school year it will also launch educational activities linked to curricular content for schools.  

The free performance will take place on Sunday 23 March at 12 noon on the Moll de Mestral quay 

MEGASTRUCTURE, by Sarah Baltzinger and Isaia Wilson, is a duet that paints a puzzle of physical and emotional connections

This Sunday 23 March at 12 noon, Port Olímpic will host the performance MEGASTRUCTURE as part of the Dansa Metropolitana festival. The free performance will take place on the Moll de Mestral quay. 

MEGASTRUCTURE is a duet by Sarah Baltzinger and Isaia Wilson that follows the trajectory of two bodies in constant coexistence. The dancing duo perform a jigsaw puzzle in which the pieces are constantly being moved, tested and reinvented. There is no sound composition or decoration; the natural rhythm is created by the bodies themselves. 

In 2024, MEGASTRUCTURE received support from Aerowaves, the European platform for emerging dance. Over the past few years, Sarah Baltzinger and Isaia Wilson have won numerous awards, including the XL Production Award from RIDCC (Netherlands), which will allow them to embark on an international tour with their new production, GOATS.

Dansa Metropolitana is back for its eighth year 

The 8th Dansa Metropolitana festival, organised by the Barcelona Institute of Culture, is taking place across 12 cities with a varied programme of styles and formats, bringing over a hundred dance performances to theatres, streets and unique venues. Running until 30 March, shows are scheduled in Badalona, Barcelona, Cornellà, El Prat, Esplugues, Granollers, L’Hospitalet, Sabadell, Sant Cugat, Santa Coloma, Terrassa and Viladecans. It also introduces new requirements for music promoters regarding noise impact, mobility, sustainability and the funding of additional cleaning, mobility and Guàrdia Urbana services

Barcelona City Council has issued a public tender for small- and large-scale night-time music festivals at Parc del Fòrum for the period 2026–2028. This initiative is part of a plan introduced last December to regulate the number of festivals held at Parc del Fòrum and define their obligations to the city. The plan aims to improve harmony with local residents and maximise the positive impact of these events on surrounding neighbourhoods, in an effort to balance these residents’ demands with the needs of the music sector.

The tender, managed through BSM, sets out the nine days per year when Parc del Fòrum may host night-time music festivals in 2026, 2027 and 2028. These nine annual days have been strategically chosen to avoid an excessive concentration of events within a short time period, helping to minimise their impact on the surrounding area. The tender also establishes maximum attendance limits, distinguishing between small-scale events with up to 9,000 attendees, and large-scale events, which can accommodate up to 30,000 people.

Thus, a public tender has been issued for one one-day large-scale festival, two two-day large-scale festivals and two two-day small-scale festivals each year.

During this three-year period, Parc del Fòrum will continue to operate with a maximum of 15 days per year for musical activities during cultural hours and 15 days with concerts running past 11:00 pm. Furthermore, Friday concerts will have to finish by 1:00 am to allow event-goers to take the metro home and minimise late-night disturbances for local residents. On all other weekdays and public holidays, performances must end by 11:00 pm, while on Saturdays and the eves of public holidays, they may continue until 3:00 am. 

As previously announced, the new rules will not apply to city events held at Parc del Fòrum, such as the Cruïlla and Primavera Sound festivals, which are governed by their own regulations and whose contracts are still in force. 

New requirements for mobility, noise impact and community benefits

The tender also introduces new obligations for music promoters with the aim of reinforcing Parc del Fòrum’s commitment to sustainability, mobility and noise control. 

One of these requirements is that organisers must develop a sustainable mobility plan that includes reaching agreements with local car parks and bicycle parking facilities, as well as conducting an environmental impact analysis focused on CO2 emissions. Additionally, for large-scale events, specific measures must be implemented to reduce traffic, such as providing shuttle buses, reaching agreements with taxi operators and extending public transport services. Event organisers will also be required to use reusable cups and take steps to reduce single-use plastics. 

Regarding noise impact, organisers must have certified technical support to monitor real-time sound levels, enabling tighter oversight and immediate corrective action if the limits are exceeded. 

From an economic standpoint, the tender sets daily venue rental fees for both concert days and set-up and dismantling days, as well as a royalty based on total ticket sales. Promoters will also be responsible for covering security, cleaning, technical services and utilities costs, as well as additional expenses for any additional cleaning, mobility and Guàrdia Urbana services associated with these events. These funds will be allocated entirely to the Sant Martí district and the City Council of Sant Adrià de Besòs. 

Furthermore, all festivals must adhere to the ‘NO CALLEM’ protocol established by Barcelona City Council to combat gender-based violence, sexual violence and LGBTI-phobia. Promoters must also implement a social impact plan in line with Parc del Fòrum’s strategy to generate positive local benefits, with a particular focus on job opportunities for young people and individuals at risk of social exclusion.

The deadline for submitting proposals is 30 April. 
 

During the event, organised by BSM and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia - BarcelonaTech (UPC), students were able to experiment with Newton’s laws through dance and to design and build a rocket propelled with water pressure

The Palau Sant Jordi hosted another edition of the STEAM meetings this morning, organised by BSM and the East Barcelona School of Engineering (EEBE) of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia – BarcelonaTech (UPC). The event brought together over 2,000 students in the second and third years of ESO (ages 13-15) from 27 schools in Barcelona and other parts of Catalonia, with the goal of enabling new generations to engage more closely with science, technology, engineering, arts and maths, awakening their interest in these areas. 

Throughout the morning, the Palau Sant Jordi became a large science classroom where students were able to enjoy activities, workshops and displays linked to subjects as diverse as biology, chemistry, technology, physics, mathematics and more. 

The participants carried out experiments such as building a rocket powered by water pressure, as well as putting Newton’s laws into practice through dance and getting a grasp of the importance of sustainable mobility models thanks to the Bicing bike-sharing service. There were also able to enjoy a laser game based on a chapter of the series The Big Bang Theory.

During the 2024-2025 school year, six STEAM days are planned, organised by BSM and the UPC, always taking place in iconic Barcelona locations such as Zoo de Barcelona, Park Güell, the Anella Olímpica, Parc del Fòrum and Tibidabo. The next STEAM sessions will be in the Parc del Fòrum, on 26 March, and at the Parc d’Atraccions Tibidabo, on 14 May. 

With these sessions, BSM and the UPC have been helping for the last seven school years to promote technical vocations among students, particularly among girls. All this is through exercises and activities that merge learning and entertainment in unique settings. 

Bicing is launching a new edition of its Vocational School, a training programme for disadvantaged people. Like last year, this mechanics course is solely for women and seeks to help them break into a male-dominated profession. 

The course is held by Serveo and BSM in partnership with the Làbora Programme of the Municipal Institute of Social Services (IMSS) of Ajuntament de Barcelona, Barcelona Activa and the organisations Fundació Surt and Intermedia Ocupació.

Initiatives like the Vocational School reinforce BSM’s commitment to equal opportunities and improved access to employment. In addition to technical training in bicycle mechanics, the programme helps participants access a traditionally male-dominated profession, helping to reduce the gender gap in the field of sustainable mobility. Ensuring that everyone has the same opportunities to find work and pursue a career in this area is key to making Bicing more accessible and equitable.

The Vocational School is one of the initiatives through which Serveo has been contributing for years to the cities in which it operates. This project creates opportunities for people in various groups at risk of exclusion, particularly women, in a highly sought-after profession due to the importance of shared and sustainable mobility in society.

Participants will receive 35 hours of theoretical training imparted by staff at the training consultancy Hedima, as well as 85 hours of hands-on training with Bicing’s mechanical team. Both parts of the course will be held at the Serveo-Pedalem’s offices and workshop in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat. 

The programme will give 12 women the opportunity to learn how both traditional and electric bicycles work and how to carry out the repair and maintenance tasks typically undertaken at the Bicing warehouse. Students will also gain job search skills and resources during the course, training them for a profession that is currently suffering from a serious shortage of qualified talent. In fact, three participants of the last edition of the Vocational School for Women joined the Serveo-Pedalem workshop after the course.
