Coach parked in the Bus Zone
Cuerpo

As of this month, 2.5 euros must be paid for brief coach stops for boarding and alighting in Bus Zones

The new measure aims to reduce the impact that tourist coaches travelling through the city are having on mobility, ensuring proper use of Bus Zones

As of 1 July, tourist coaches will have to pay 2.5 euros for passenger pick-up and drop-off stops in Bus Zones. As was the case up to now, such stops, which are invariably made close to points of high tourist interest, cannot last for longer than 10 minutes and need to be registered with SPRO, the metropolitan app for professional drivers. Payments are also made through this platform.

Barcelona City Council, through Barcelona de Serveis Municipals (BSM), is therefore giving effect to the Tax Byelaw on Regulated Vehicle Parking on public highways. As stipulated in the tax byelaw, the proceeds obtained from this levy will go towards funding initiatives that promote sustainable mobility.

The new measure aims to reduce the impact that tourist coaches travelling through the city are having on mobility, ensuring proper use of Bus Zones.

An exclusive parking and stopping area for tourist coaches

Bus Zones are made up of all the spaces reserved for tourist coaches to stop or park in. They are invariably located close to places that attract large numbers of visitors, such as the Sagrada Família, Ciutat Vella, Park Güell and La Pedrera. There are currently 35 Bus Zone areas with a total of 162 parking places

Use of these exclusive parking and stopping zones for coaches enables more orderly access to these popular tourist attractions, while helping to improve vehicle-traffic and pedestrian flows in general.

SPRO, the metropolitan app for professional drivers

Last year, the management of the Barcelona Bus Zone was incorporated into SPRO, the app for professional drivers, and over 2,300 coach drivers are now using it. Thanks to that, these professionals can now manage their stops and parking in the city quickly and flexibly via their mobiles.

Besides its use for the Bus Zone, since 2020 SPRO has been the benchmark app for professional drivers who use goods loading and unloading areas (DUM). It currently has over 130,000 distribution professionals registered with it and operates in 8 metropolitan municipalities: Barcelona, Castelldefels, Esplugues de Llobregat, Hospitalet de Llobregat, Sant Joan Despí, Sant Boi de Llobregat, Sant Just Desvern and Santa Coloma de Gramenet.

This is a project financed with funds from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, financed by European Union – NextGenerationEU.

Bike party games with the participation of many cyclists
Cuerpo

It will be launched in the autumn and will allow users to know whether they will find a bicycle or a free space at a station with 15 to 30 minutes prior notice

The new service will help users to plan their journeys better, avoid unnecessary journeys and save time

This year is the 15th anniversary of the Bicing service, which now totals 7,000 bicycles and more 500 stations across the whole city

Bicing users will know in advance whether they will find bicycles and free spaces at the stations. From this autumn, SMOU, the Bicing service’s official app, will incorporate a new predictive service that will allow users to know the availability at a station within 15 or 30 minutes of making a query. To this effect, subscribers will be able to plan their mobility options around the city better.

SMOU already shows the number of bicycles and spaces available in real time. With the new functionality, users will also be able to know the predicted availability and, with this information, choose which station to go to.

The information will be shown in a simple to understand way via the app. You will only have to select the station of interest and click on the new predicted availability button. This way, users will be able to know whether the probability of finding a bicycle or a space is high, medium or low.

This will be made possible thanks to the incorporation of software that will consider variables like the historical record of availability at a station, the weather situation and the routes that the vehicles that replace the bicycles usually take.

Presence at the Bicycle Festival

This new predictive service was presented to coincide with Bicing’s 15th anniversary celebrations, which took place during the Bicycle Festival in Passeig Lluís Companys. Bicing had a stand at the festival where visitors were able to try the electric bicycles and take part in a scratch card competition with prizes to chose from that included annual subscriptions, points for the Bicing Game app and merchandising, among others.

15 years of evolution, innovation and the promotion of sustainable mobility

Bicing is today one of Barcelona’s safest, most sustainable and healthy individual transport systems, and in the 15 years it has been in operation has been confirmed as one of the world’s highest-rated bicycle services. At European level, Barcelona is the city with the highest density of stations per square kilometre and the highest bicycle rotation level.

It was launched in March 2007 with 200 bicycles and 14 stations, with the aim of promoting the use of bicycles as a sustainable form of public transport. That same year, the service increased exponentially to include 3,000 bicycles and 194 stations. Nowadays, it has a total of 7,000 bicycles, 3,000 of which are electric, and 519 stations.

Bicing is a benchmark of its kind not only for its offer and service quality, but also because it was pioneer in the installation of a system that combines totally versatile mechanical and hybrid bicycles. It only requires installing an electric kit onto the vehicle’s chassis.

More than 45,000 daily uses

At the end of May, Bicing had more than 131,000 subscribers. More than 14 million uses were registered for the whole of last year, with an daily average of around 45,000 uses. So far this year, daily use is already over 47,000.

More than 400 tonnes of CO2 saved

According to internal studies carried out by Barcelona City Council and BSM (Barcelona Municipal Services), last year the Bicing service saved around 200,000 journeys in fuel-driven vehicles. They would have been made by the 9% of users who would take their car or motorbike if this shared bicycle service did not exist. This reduction represents an annual saving of more that 400 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, the same amount as a wood the size of two Ciutadella parks or 62 Eixample blocks would absorb.

The Moll de Mestral wharf is hosting various music and stage events this Saturday

This is the first time that the Port Olímpic has joined in with the local festival, the idea being to open it up to local people

This weekend sees the Port Olímpic become one of the venues for the local festival in the Vila Olímpica neighbourhood. As from 7 pm on Saturday, the Moll de Mestral wharf will be hosting various music and stage events aimed at all audiences.

There’s a dance and performing arts display at 7 pm. Oriental dance and line dancing groups for the local community centre will be performing, with a line dance class where everybody can take part too. After that, the AULES school will be performing a show created in the Commedia dell’Arte workshops.

From 9 pm it’s the turn of the Barcelona band CAPINÀS, who will be presenting their latest disc Visceral, filling the wharf with rumba.

The full festival programme can be found here.

A port linked to the citizens

This is the first time the Port Olímpic has hosted activities for the Vila Olímpica neighbourhood festival. The initiative corresponds to the twofold aim of getting local people involved in the transformation of this space and reconnecting the port with the surrounding area.

Work gets under way in July on the new access routes to the create a direct link between Avinguda Litoral and a large recreational area and promenade at Moll de Mestral.  The work should take a year and do away with barriers and changes in levels, generating continuity between the neighbourhoods of Vila Olímpica and the port.

Various communication initiatives are planned to coincide with the start of the work, such as an information leaflet to be sent out and guided tours of the facilities at the port offered, with the collaboration of the local residents’ associations of Vila Olímpica, Front Marítim and Diagonal Mar. The purpose of the tour is to explain how the works are progressing, the new uses of the port and the activity that will be developed there by B:SM, who is responsible for its management.

New baby orangutan with its mother at Barcelona Zoo
Cuerpo

The baby was born in May and is in perfect health

Borneo orangutans are a highly threatened species, in critical danger as a result of deforestation in their natural habitat

Helping to improve biodiversity and raising awareness about it are priority areas in the new model for Barcelona Zoo

A new Borneo orangutan was born at Barcelona Zoo on 15 May. The baby is the third daughter of Jawi, a 25-year old orangutan who was also born at the Zoo. The baby is in perfect health and has already been seen clinging to its mother and breast feeding.

The father is Karl, the reproductive male among the group of Borneo orangutans at the Zoo. Karl is 25 years old and was born in Dublin. The new baby brings the number of orangutans in Barcelona Zoo to seven. This species is in critical danger in its natural habitat.

The species is highly threatened and its numbers are falling in its natural habitat

The new model for the Zoo aims to actively contribute to conservation, scientific research and dissemination of fauna and its natural habitats, with a special emphasis on Mediterranean fauna and species in danger of extinction, under sustainability criteria and always caring for the welfare of the animals. In this respect, the director of Barcelona Zoo, Antoni Alarcon, stressed the importance of the birth of the new Borneo orangutan, given that this is a highly endangered species in critical danger of extinction, according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

“It’s great news bearing in mind Barcelona Zoo’s conscious effort to become a biodiversity preservation centre. Deforestation in the jungles of Borneo and Sumatra caused by felling trees and the cultivation of palm oil means this species has suffered a significant decline. That’s why the role of Barcelona Zoo and other zoos is important within the Ex-situ conservation programmes by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA). Within a few years it’s very likely that orangutans born in captivity will need to be reintroduced on the islands of Indonesia”.

The European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) also celebrated the birth due to the conservation implications for the species, and because it will help make visitors to Barcelona Zoo more aware of the need to look after the natural habitat of all animals which are in severe danger of extinction as a result of human activity. In this respect, Alarcon noted that “the Barcelona Zoo Foundation works in conjunction with the Borneo Nature Foundation (BNF) on conservation, awareness and education programmes among the local population in a bid to save this primate”.

Today, 22 June, the Amusement Park begins its summer season, extending its opening times during the weekends of July and the month of August

Two of its most popular shows are back: Gerónimo Stilton, in July, and the Laser Show, during the nights of August

Tibidabo will also be hosting the solidarity festival “Posa’t la gorra” [Put your hat on] to raise funds for children and adolescents with cancer, as well as the concert organised by the Vozes Association, which works with vulnerable groups

Tibidabo Amusement Park kicks off its 2022 summer season with the slogan “How long since your last Tibidabo time?”.

From 22 June, visitors will have even more time to have fun and enjoy an unforgettable experience, above the City of Barcelona, with extended opening hours. During the weekends of July, the Park will be closing one hour later, at 10 pm. And these extended opening times will apply throughout August, from Wednesday to Sunday. This means that visitors can enjoy all the Park's attractions, shows and catering services for 11 hours.

The summer hits are back

During these months, Tibidabo is bringing back two of its most popular shows for visitors. In July, younger children can once again sing and dance along with our most famous mouse, Gerónimo Stilton. And in August, young and old alike can enjoy one of the most popular closing shows of the season: the Laser Show, organised by 7ART, which will fill Plaça dels Somnis with light and colour every night.

Tibidabo, social and educational commitment

During the summer, the Park maintains its commitment to solidarity and education, by showcasing organisations and non-profit associations, as well as fostering educational sessions in a different setting. There are two solidarity events scheduled, with which Tibidabo collaborates every year. First, the “Posa’t la gorra” [Put your hat on] festival, organised by AFANOC, which raises funds for children and adolescents with cancer, as well as raising the visibility of this group. Then there is the concert organised by the Vozes Association, a music organisation that works to improve social cohesion and offers free, high-quality music training to vulnerable young people.

On 11 July, the Park is hosting the “Mathematics Route” as part of the International Adults Learning Mathematics Congress (ALM), with the collaboration of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. A group of 15 mathematicians from around the world will carry out experiments related to the Giradabo, Avió and Carrusel attractions, under the supervision of professor and researcher Luis Carlos Pardo.

The first team will move to Montjuïc while part of the construction work on Espai Barça is carried out

The City Council and FC Barcelona have developed a mobility plan to boost public transport and sustainable mobility, while also increasing maintenance and security services

The arrangement will be compatible with other events held in the Olympic Ring and Montjuïc mountain

FC Barcelona's first team will play in the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium during the 2023-24 season. Barcelona City Council, Barcelona de Serveis Municipals (B:SM), the facility manager and FC Barcelona have signed an agreement that will allow the club to use the Olympic facilities while most of the renovation work on Camp Nou is carried out.

This morning, Jaume Collboni, the first Deputy Mayor and president of B:SM, and Joan Laporta, president of FC Barcelona, explained the terms of the agreement.

FC Barcelona will be able to use the stadium from August 2023 to May 2024. The lease agreement will be for the men's first team match days and the preparations before and after those days. FC Barcelona may also use the stadium on other specific occasions, for training and other sporting events, including those that the women’s team may need.

FC Barcelona will adapt the facility to its technical needs

In addition to the playing field and stands, the lease agreement includes other spaces, such as the press stand, the changing rooms and indoor car parks, among others.

The Club's technical services are now assessing what adaptations will need to be made to the facilities in order to satisfy the needs of the various sporting competitions the first team takes part in. These investments will be paid for by the club.

During the leasing period, Barça will have a guaranteed crowd capacity of nearly 55,000 people.

Barça will be coexisting with all the other Olympic Ring events and the vibrancy of Montjuïc mountain

The City Council, B:SM and FC Barcelona have ensured that the Club's activities will be compatible with all the other cultural, sporting and civic uses of the Olympic Ring and the other facilities on Montjuïc mountain. In all cases, it will be taken into account that the matches should not coincide or interfere with any other event scheduled for Palau Sant Jordi or the Olympic Esplanade.

Improvement work in the area around the mountain and stepping up the various municipal services

In order to ensure that the general public has good access to the Olympic Stadium, Barcelona City Council and FC Barcelona have produced a mobility plan that reinforces public transport and sustainable mobility, as well as putting in place extraordinary maintenance and security services to ensure that there is as little impact as possible on the mountain. The cost associated with these services is €7.2 million, 64% of which will be paid by Barça and 36% by the City Council. The municipal contribution will be for investments that will remain permanently on the mountain. The funicular railway services will be improved, there will be shuttle buses to the Olympic Stadium from the main public transport access points (Plaça Espanya, L9 and Estació de Sants) and the members of the various supporters’ clubs will be encouraged to arrive by coach. Where necessary, due to the time of the match, it is also planned to extend the opening hours of the metro service.

The cost of extending public transport services will be borne by the Club, along with the cost of the extraordinary maintenance and security services.

In order to foster sustainable mobility on the mountain, there will also be a bicycle lane between Plaça Espanya and Miramar, 3 Bicing stations and parking spaces for bicycles.

Where needed, street lighting will be improved for match times along the main walking routes and pedestrian paths will be stabilised between public transport points and the stadium.

The Olympic Ring: emblematic venues at the service of culture, sport and the city's international positioning

Thirty years after the Barcelona ‘92 Games, the Olympic Ring remains an active place that positions the city internationally as a location of major cultural, sporting and leisure events. Furthermore, the Lluís Companys Stadium, the Olympic Esplanade and Palau Sant Jordi host a wide range of activities for the general public, especially families, thereby maintaining the connection between Barcelona residents and these emblematic venues.

Once again, the agreement with FC Barcelona exemplifies the role that the Olympic Ring plays as a generator of Barcelona’s economic, sporting and cultural activity, and Barcelona's commitment to respond to the needs of major institutions that help to promote the city and its values.

B:SM, Barcelona City Council's own services company, has integrated the users and clients of the different services and activities in the spheres of mobility, culture, leisure and public space care that the entity manages into the cloud-based Microsoft CRM

The solution implemented covers the marketing, commercial and customer care services. This integration has facilitated a global perspective while also enabling a personalised management for each business, some of which are quite different from one another

ABAST, a Microsoft partner that specialises in business management solutions, helped B:SM to roll out the platform

B:SM has chosen the Microsoft Dynamics 365 technology to launch a digitalisation plan focused on unifying the management of some of its processes to improve relationships with clients and users.

The company has now become established as a reference and pioneer in the areas of urban mobility, culture, leisure and public space care: it spearheads challenges such as the transformation of the Olympic Port, the development of the public network of electric charging points, Endolla Barcelona (the largest in the country), and the application for shared mobility services, SMOU. It also manages emblematic services and spaces in the city, such as Bicing, the network of 43 B:SM car parks, Park Güell, the Olympic Ring, Parc del Fòrum, Tibidabo Amusement Park, and the Barcelona Zoo, among others.

Stemming from its philosophy of continuous improvement, and as part of the process of digital transformation it is currently undergoing, B:SM has decided to opt for technological renovation to set the foundations for the new relational, homogeneous, and integrative marketing model. The objective is to improve citizen knowledge in the short term, and to provide better, more direct, and more customised service to the population of the entire metropolitan area.

In this context, it is more important than ever to have a 360º view of all the products and services, as well as of the interactions with citizens. To achieve this, B:SM has adopted the CRM Microsoft Dynamics 365, which provides it with a comprehensive overview of the business and allows it to offer more personalised customer support services. In addition, thanks to its cloud location, the migration allows all the power of the Microsoft suite to be harnessed, guaranteeing constant updates and providing the opportunity to add more features with Microsoft modules and modules from other certified manufacturers in a quick and agile manner.

Comprehensive business overview that improves the relationship with the clients

With this project, B:SM's main objective was to create a system that offered it personalised knowledge of its clients to reach a direct relationship, bringing value and supporting the development of tailor-made products, thus anticipating future needs.

The company, which has more than 1 million active users, has managed to unify all the planning and marketing actions performed (both at the corporate level and on an individual level) for each of the business areas in a single platform, thanks to Dynamics 365: everything from researching opportunities crossed between databases, always in accordance with the client's preferences, to automating marketing campaigns and obtaining new leads.

A centralised framework has also been rolled out that integrates the insight gained from all the citizen relationships forged with the different service areas, facilitating a comprehensive perspective. At the same time, each of these departments continues to individually manage its own users and clients.

The Microsoft Dynamics client care module offers the characteristics of a complete multi-channel service, since citizen queries and requests can be received via the website, email, telephone, mobile appsand, in some businesses, the chat bot.

B:SM is also using Dynamics 365 for the commercial management of some business areas, such as the rental or granting of spaces in facilities managed by the company: Palau Sant Jordi, Parc del Fòrum, the Zoo, and the B:SM network of car parks, among others. The sales module provides its commercial representatives with different features, such as the management of opportunities and offers and completely secure access to important client information.

A solution adapted to the needs of B:SM

ABAST, a Microsoft partner that specialises in business management solutions, helped B:SM to roll out the platform. One of the most important challenges that had to be tackled was integrating the information. Given the diversity of the services and businesses managed by B:SM, the company sought to integrate more than 18 programmes that worked with 37 different databases into the CRM. To achieve this integration, the ABAST and B:SM teams worked on organising and standardising the origin points. The outcome is that every day each origin point sends its data to the Microsoft programme to be managed in accordance with the strategy of each business, always with a comprehensive vision.

To improve telephone attention, ABAST integrated the CRM with the different call centres using a CTI solution. The system not only identifies the user, provided they call from a telephone number that is registered with the CRM, but it also identifies the telephone service where the call has come from, for example, the Barcelona Zoo's telephone helpline, the Bicing customer service, etc. With this information, the most important and potentially useful information is recovered and shown so that the operator can better handle the call.

"The solution implemented has brought many advantages for several of our teams," explains Mayra Nieto, director of Communication and Marketing at B:SM. "It has allowed us to have a single, standardised database that we can exploit autonomously and with a global vision. It has also enabled us to segment all our clients to a much greater degree and obtain more knowledge about their preferences. Likewise, we have been able to increase the number of automated loyalty-creating actions, measure the return on investment and effectiveness of our campaigns much better and obtain a comprehensive vision of the users. All this means that we can continue to progress in our commitment to excellence and to creating experiences in the spheres of mobility, leisure, and culture, which all have a shared central feature: the well-being of people".

The construction of the new access route, which will provide a direct link between the Olympic Port and Avinguda del Litoral and the Vila Olímpica neighbourhood, will begin in July

After the summer, work will begin on creating the first blue economy centre, located on the site of the former nightspots Moll de Mestral and Dic de Recer

Moll de Mestral will become a huge square, and Dic de Recer will become a new viewpoint looking out to sea, available for sports use and open to pedestrians

These actions have been allocated an investment of almost 18 million euros

An Olympic Port connected to the city and committed to generating economic activity linked to the sea and the blue economy. The process of transforming the Olympic Port, led by Barcelona de Serveis Municipals (B:SM) under the charge of Barcelona City Council, takes another step forward. Work on the new access routes to the port, which will create a direct link between Avinguda Litoral and a large recreational area and promenade at Moll de Mestral, will begin in July.

More specifically, the work consists in building a new thoroughfare for pedestrians and vehicles, which will eliminate any barriers and level out the entire area to create continuity with the Vila Olímpica neighbourhood and the port itself. The redevelopment, evidenced this week with the execution of the first preliminary works, will take a year to complete and has a budget allocation of 3.6 million euros.

The works aim to bring to fruition one of the aims of the Olympic Port in this new phase: to become a space open to the dynamism of the city and closely linked with the daily life of the territory it forms part of. Furthermore, the thoroughfare will give vehicles direct access to the B:SM Litoral Port car park, which will also be reformed.

Once the work is completed, this will be the main entrance to the Olympic Port. To this effect, the vehicle ramp currently located at the end of Carrer de Marina will later be dismantled. The disappearance of this structure, planned for autumn 2023, will eliminate the visual impact it currently has on the whole port.

The city’s first blue economy centre

The construction of the new access routes is not the only advance that will be made in the process of transforming the port in the coming months. In the last week of September, when the summer boating season comes to an end, the redevelopment of the premises of Moll de Mestral and Dic de Recer will also begin. These two premises will become the site of the city’s first blue economy centre, an initiative committed to economic and social development and respect for marine ecosystems. In the case of the Olympic Port, specialisation in nautical activities and services, the circular economy and innovation and technology is planned.

The focal point of this part of the project is Moll de Mestral. The former nightspots will become a pole of attraction for blue economy companies and entrepreneurship, with a useful surface area of 2,600 m2 and the potential to generate 250 new jobs. The space will be divided into 23 premises, making up two blocks of offices located on either side of the new access road. There will also be some communal spaces, including a 150-person capacity function room which can be used by any port installation users to hold events and activities, and will also be available to city residents and the business community.

The reforms of the Moll de Mestral premises will be completed in September 2023 and will have a budget allocation of 5.1 million euros.

The new Olympic Port spaces dedicated to the blue economy will also include 2,638 m2 located under Dic de Recer. A further 28 premises suitable for business activity will be located there, in addition to 70 storage spaces, which will also undergo reforms. In this case, the work will take 15 months and will be carried out in parallel to the redevelopment of Dic de Recer. The two operations have been allocated a budget of 9 million euros.

The transformation of the Olympic Port will mean the blue economy will be concentrated in three large areas: Moll de Mestral, Dic de Recer and Moll de Marina. The latter, which is already in operation, has a total of 17 nautical activity and service premises.

The promotion of the blue economy at the Olympic Port will be developed in parallel to the dynamisation of nautical activity, a strategy which includes, as strategic elements, the use of port installations, which has already been largely achieved, the future reform of the Vela Municipal Centre, and the generation of synergies between the different operators using the facilities, all with a clear objective: to position the Olympic Port as a space for regattas and other marine outreach activities.

More public space for city residents to enjoy

The transformation of the Olympic Port also aims to generate more public space for taking a stroll, relaxing and practising sports. In parallel to the reform of these nautical premises, the Dic de Recer will also undergo redevelopment on both the port side and the city side, an area totalling 10,000 m2.

The upper part of Dic de Recer will become a new viewpoint looking out to sea, open to all city residents. To further the objective of facilitating the relationship between the city and the port, Dic de Recer will have two new sets of steps, which will link the area of the promenade with the docks on the lower level.

The completion of the redevelopment of the Mestral business area will also facilitate the creation of a huge 10,000 m2 square.

A new direction with a 2024 horizon

Making headway with the transformation of the Olympic Port ties in with the opportunities presented to the city by hosting the America’s Cup in 2024. The start of the construction of the new access route and the reform of the new spaces dedicated to the blue economy represent the consolidation of two of the strategic lines of the new Olympic Port.

Furthermore, a large part of the updating of the marine and port infrastructures, which has an investment of 9.1 million euros, has already been completed. Notable among the works carried out are the consolidation of Dic de Recer, which was completed this spring, the main tasks of which were the construction of a new wavebreaker and the reinforcement of four submerged dykes to protect the installations from wave surges during storms. This task has allowed the seabed itself to regenerate. The work on the anchoring chain has also been completed and the mooring guide systems have been renovated. These actions have enabled the moorings to be reorganised, increasing both security and the space allocated to each vessel.

A port linked to the neighbourhood

At the same time as the major transformation works begin, in July, the Olympic Port will launch a series of initiatives aimed at the surrounding neighbourhood The objective is to get them involved in this new stage, which means a strengthened relationship with the neighbourhood and the port’s integration into the daily life of the city.

Among other actions, an information leaflet will be sent out and guided tours of the Olympic Port installations will be organised, with the collaboration of the local resident associations of  Vila Olímpica, Front Marítim and Diagonal Mar The purpose of the tour is to explain how the works are progressing, the new uses of the Olympic Port and the activity that will be developed there by B:SM, who is responsible for its management.

Furthermore, in September, and to coincide with the reform of the blue economy premises, the Olympic Port will organise an outreach activity day for families.
